Overview

About

Central Texas Electric Cooperative (CTEC) is a forward-thinking utility cooperative that firmly upholds the seven cooperative principles; guiding its commitment to community service, democratic member control, and economic participation. In an effort to further engage their diverse audience and enhance the member experience, CTEC collaborated with Powerful to undertake a comprehensive website redesign. This redesign was not just about aesthetic improvement; it was a strategic move to engage their audience more effectively, leveraging the power of technology to embody the cooperative principles in a modern, accessible format.

Bridging Accessibility & Community Needs

Addressing the diverse needs of its members, the website redesign placed a strong emphasis on accessibility compliance. Powerful developed the website to meet the latest accessibility guidelines, ensuring comprehensive access for all members, regardless of their abilities. These accessibility features include enhanced print functionality for better offline access, mouse-free navigation with landing tiles for those with difficulty using a mouse, larger font sizes with on-page zoom functionality for vision impairment, required alt-tags for images, and properly labeled form fields.

Engaging Design for Better Understanding

Powerful also prioritized the simplification of complex information to cater to a broad audience. Powerful’s approach involved the creative use of visuals and intuitive layouts to enhance key sections of the site, such as SmartHub, Understanding My Bill, and Bill Pay Options. For example, the SmartHub page was reimagined with simplicity in mind. This visualized page’s graphics enable members to easily navigate and manage their SmartHub accounts. The Understanding My Bill page uses visual breakdowns and infographics to demystify the billing process, making it transparent and easy to comprehend. Similarly, the Bill Pay Options page was designed with clear visual cues, guiding members through various payment methods effortlessly.

This focus on simplifying and visualizing complex information boosts member engagement while aligning with CTEC’s goal of educating and informing its community. As a result, visualized pages make energy management a more approachable and less daunting task for all members.

Challenges

Powerful and CTEC were challenged with a significant task-- creating a community-oriented website for a large member base of approximately 29,000 member-owners. A key challenge was ensuring that the website's design and functionality aligned with the diverse needs and preferences of a substantial member base. They needed a design that was both visually appealing and representative of the community it served, encompassing a broad range of elements unique to Central Texas.

Solutions

To address these challenges, Powerful focused on customizing the website to reflect CTEC's community and values. A key solution was the creation of a custom illustrated footer, which became a focal point of the redesign. This footer was carefully designed to showcase the unique characteristics of CTEC’s service territory, featuring notable landmarks that resonate with member owners. Powerful also ensured that the footer illustration seamlessly tied into CTEC's existing logo, fostering a unified and coherent branding across the website.

Results

CTEC's custom illustrated footer has become a standout feature. The integration of unique landmarks into the website's design enhances the visual appeal while celebrating CTEC's local identity, fostering a deeper sense of pride among members. The redesign effectively elevates CTEC's online presence, making it more engaging and reflective of its community-oriented mission.

CTEC really needed a website to reflect the services they offer. Powerful Web's "Task-Oriented" platform is a perfect fit. The whole site is responsive to mobile or desktop and features the best ADA compliance.

Working with the CTEC team to create their illustrated footer has been an absolute delight! Having recently moved to Texas, I've gained a personal appreciation for the intricate details that the CTEC team infused into their design. It's truly fascinating to see the iconic landmarks from their service territory come alive in the vibrant and detailed illustrations of their footer. It's a wonderful experience to see these familiar sights artistically represented and to know they resonate with their local community.
