With its rich history dating back to 1938, Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC) and its subsidiary, EMPOWER Broadband, has dedicated itself to illuminating rural America. With the need to enhance their online presence and effectively communicate their innovative services to a broader audience, MEC partnered with Powerful. This collaboration aimed at redesigning their website to reflect their commitment to innovation and member satisfaction.

Increased Engagement through Design

MEC sought to communicate their primary messaging goals: Unclaimed Capital Credits, News Spotlight, and Solar Information. To achieve this objective, Powerful implemented the Laurelhurst Promotional Blueprint. This framework brings MEC’s main messaging to the foreground of the homepage.

Central to the Laurelhurst Promotional Blueprint’s success is its ability to integrate essential information with an aesthetic appeal. Each segment of the homepage is thoughtfully designed to offer visitors an intuitive layout; combining brief descriptions, compelling imagery, and distinct action buttons. The blueprint’s strategic layout facilitates seamless navigation, encouraging members to explore in-depth content on the interior pages. As a result, MEC’s new website increases engagement and awareness about MEC’s initiatives and services.

Enhanced Branding & Design for Cohesive Communication

The Laurelhurst Promotional Blueprint is complemented by a cohesive branding and design strategy that aligns with MEC’s identity. The meticulous use of blue in the website’s color scheme mirrors the hues of their logo, creating a visual consistency that reinforces brand recognition. The thoughtful integration of MEC’s branding elements ensures that the website reflects their legacy of community service and member-first mission, further strengthening the trust and loyalty of their members.

The design also incorporates responsive layouts, ensuring a seamless visitor experience across all devices. This approach prioritizes accessibility, making sure that every member, regardless of how they access the site, receives the same high-quality experience. Through the blend of branding and functionality, MEC’s online presence becomes a powerful extension of their in-person services.

Challenges

EMPOWER sought to enhance the presentation of various rate plans to their members. They aimed for a solution that could simplify the complexities of rate plan options, making them straightforward and engaging for all members. Recognizing the diversity in their members' technical abilities was a key consideration, driving the need for an intuitive and accessible approach to rate plan information.

Solutions

In response, Powerful implemented the Rate Plans App. This app features an intuitive interface with distinct tiles for each rate plan, allowing for easy comparison at a glance. Each tile includes an action button that leads members to more detailed information, enhancing their understanding and engagement with the available options. This approach simplifies the decision-making process, catering to the diverse technological abilities of EMPOWER's member base. Additionally, the app is designed for easy updates on the backend, enabling administrators to promptly reflect changes in rate plans, ensuring that the information is always current and accurate.

Results

The Rate Plans App significantly improves member engagement and understanding. The intuitive design empowers members to confidently select plans that match their usage and preferences. The ease of updating rate plan information on the backend streamlines operations, ensuring members always have access to the latest information.

The team at Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative has a deep commitment to quality which is why the rebranded website experience aligns so well. The primary blue is a rich color that’s bold, and it confidently creates a sense of regard. The secondary gold, cyan and charcoal grey complement the overall experience nicely.

I had the privilege of being the project manager for Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative's website redesign. In addition to the website redesign, MEC underwent a logo change. Coordinating the two of these items to unveil and launch seamlessly together ensured that members experienced a cohesive and unified brand presence across all touch points. By aligning the website launch with the unveiling of their new logo, we reinforced Mecklenburg's commitment to innovation and member satisfaction.
