About

South Alabama Electric Cooperative (SAEC) operates an expansive network of approximately 2,832 miles of electric lines, serving a diverse and growing membership. As a member of PowerSouth Energy Cooperative and the Alabama Rural Electric Association, SAEC is dedicated to maintaining high standards of quality and reliability. Recognizing the evolving needs of its community, SAEC partnered with Powerful to design a new website. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in SAEC’s journey, aiming to enhance its online presence to reflect its longstanding commitment to service, community involvement, and member accessibility.

Anticipating Member Needs

Powerful’s task-oriented blueprint was central to the redesign. This approach carefully mapped out the primary tasks that SAEC’s members regularly engage in, such as starting or stopping service, exploring payment options, and accessing bill payment features. By prioritizing these tasks, Powerful aimed to simplify the visitor experience, ensuring that members could easily navigate and complete their intended actions without unnecessary complexity. This blueprint streamlines processes while understanding and anticipating the needs of the cooperative’s members, ultimately creating a more satisfying experience for members.

Conveying Core Values & Services

Through a collaborative process, SAEC expressed their goal to highlight key aspects such as community involvement, energy conservation resources, outage monitoring, and mobile home rebates. Powerful’s team of trusted web experts developed a strategy that focused on organizing and presenting this information in a way that resonated with SAEC’s members. By establishing clear visual hierarchy and navigation, this approach ensures that SAEC’s key information is both accessible and engaging. With easy-access to a variety of information, the website encourages members to explore various aspects of SAEC’s services and community initiatives.

Ensuring Accessibility for All

A critical aspect of the website redesign was adherence to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance standards. This compliance meant redesigning the website to be accessible to all visitors, including those with disabilities. Powerful achieved this through a variety of measures such as alternative text for images, keyboard navigation compatibility, and easily readable fonts. By incorporating ADA compliance into their redesign, Powerful enhanced the website’s usability while underscoring SAEC’s dedication to serving and respecting the diverse needs of its entire member base.

Challenges

South Alabama Electric Cooperative (SAEC) faced the overarching challenge of enhancing the visual presentation of content across their website. There was a growing need to make complex information more accessible and engaging. This challenge was particularly pronounced in high-traffic areas of the site, such as the "Ways to Pay" page, which needed to be more than just informative – it needed to be intuitively navigable and visually appealing to ensure a positive visitor experience.

Solutions

To address this challenge, Powerful simplified lengthy, complex information through content visualization on highly-frequented pages like "Ways to Pay". Powerful's design team introduced interactive elements such as infographics and custom icons to break down extensive walls of words. This approach aimed to simplify and clarify the presentation of different payment options, making them instantly recognizable and easier to navigate. This approach was complemented by ADA compliance measures, ensuring the website was accessible to all members of the community, regardless of their abilities.

Results

The utilization of visualized pages significantly improved SAEC members' online experience. The use of clear, engaging visuals made highly-visited pages more intuitive, reducing confusion and enhancing engagement. The effective combination of interactive design elements, strategic use of color, and typography, along with accessibility compliance, resulted in a more engaging and accessible website, aligning with SAEC’s commitment to providing excellent service to its community.

Our website was not very member friendly and did not allow our members full access to all the services we offer. It needed a more current, fresh, inviting design that would provide a valuable resource for our members.

We already had a relationship with Pioneer providing our monthly publication, annual report, social media, and numerous other projects. The service was proven and made perfect sense to allow Powerful to be our website designer.

Having our monthly publication repurposed for our website allows us a tremendous platform to keep our members informed on a current basis. Also, having all the tools and options available online such as applying for electric service and making payments has already been applauded by our membership.
