Overview

About

Salmon River Electric Cooperative (SREC) exemplifies community spirit. With their history tracing back to 1953, SREC has served as an important part of their community. As times evolved, so did the need for an updated online presence. Identifying the importance of balancing tradition with innovation, SREC collaborated with Powerful to give their website a contemporary feel while retaining its foundational spirit and history. SREC’s goal was to carry forward their legacy with a modern, accessible, and inclusive website.

Inclusive & Intuitive Design

Prioritizing all of SREC’s members, Powerful created a universally accessible interface. Readability was enhanced with adaptable font sizes and high-contrast color schemes, catering to those with visual impairments. Alternative text was added to images, ensuring screen readers could convey the information to visitors. To meet the importance of responsive design, the site was also optimized for various screen sizes, ensuring an unhindered experience for visitors whether they accessed the site via phone, tablet, or desktop. Simple language and clear call-to-actions were used throughout the site, catering to visitors of all ages and digital literacy levels. By placing accessibility at the forefront, SREC ensures that every member felt seen, heard, and valued.

Building on the foundation of accessibility, SREC’s new website also focuses on intuitive navigation through a task-oriented blueprint. The homepage prominently features call-to-action buttons that direct visitors to top services such as bill payment, membership applications, and outage reporting. These buttons are strategically placed for easy visibility and access, making it straightforward for members to accomplish their primary tasks without unnecessary searching or complexity.

Challenges

Offering both electric and propane services posed a distinct branding dilemma: how does an organization allow 2 services to shine individually, highlighting their unique offerings and values, while ensuring they are part of a unified brand story? It was crucial that each service stands out, owning its space, without seeming completely disjointed from SREC's overall brand identity.

Solutions

To create a cohesive brand experience, Powerful used design elements that could universally represent both electric and propane services. Colors, icons, and typography were carefully chosen to convey trust, reliability, and energy. Central to the design was a flexible, consistent blueprint. Both the electric and propane websites have similar layouts, ultimately helping visitors navigate throughout familiar frameworks.

Results

With consistent design elements, iconography, and color palettes across both services, the redesigned website improves SREC's member trust. This balance of differentiation and integration elevates SREC’s brand perception, further solidifying their reputation as a comprehensive, versatile energy and propane provider.

When working on a website, we incorporate subsites as needed, along with content optimization, to enhance its visitor-friendliness and aesthetic appeal. For Salmon River Electric Cooperative, a task-oriented blueprint was selected to display essential tasks with utmost clarity and efficiency. Additionally, a subsite was integrated to provide distinct benefits by organizing content and functionality efficiently. They facilitate easy access to specific information and services to enhance visitor satisfaction and productivity.
