Overview

Meet Public Utility District No. 2 of Pacific County

Public Utility District No. 2 of Pacific County is a customer-owned utility, deeply integrated into its community by providing crucial services like electricity, water, and telecommunication. In their pursuit to enhance their communications and offer these services online, they partnered with Powerful. This collaboration aimed to revamp the PUD’s website, making it a more intuitive and informative resource for the community they serve.

Comprehensive Content Strategy

Addressing the challenge of effectively showcasing the PUD’s diverse range of services, Powerful strategized the content. The initial step involved a detailed content audit to assess and optimize the existing information. This audit laid the groundwork for restructuring the website’s content, ensuring that each service—electricity, water, and telecommunications—was distinctly categorized and easily navigable within the global navigation menu. This segmentation—clearly differentiating electric, water, and telecom services—creates an intuitive visitor experience, allowing customers to effortlessly engage with the information relevant to their needs.

Intuitive Design

Building on the foundation of a well-organized content strategy, Powerful implemented a task-oriented design blueprint for the PUD’s website. This approach was centered around understanding and prioritizing the primary needs of the PUD’s customers. By collaborating closely with the PUD, Powerful identified key tasks that customers frequently sought to accomplish on the site, such as starting or stopping service, reporting outages, and making quick payments. These critical tasks were then prominently featured in action buttons on the website’s hero section, ensuring they were immediately visible and accessible to visitors upon their arrival at the site.

Challenges

Public Utility District No. 2 of Pacific County aimed to enhance their website to create a stronger connection with their community. Beyond functionality, there was an opportunity to enhance their engagement by infusing more local character and vibrancy. Powerful was challenged to create a design that would make the website truly "pop", reflecting the rich cultural and natural heritage of the service area.

Solutions

In response to this challenge, Powerful crafted a solution that infuses the website with local flavor and charm. The introduction of a custom illustrated footer helped achieve this goal. The footer showcases the region's lighthouses, ocean, oysters, fishing, and forests. More than a visual enhancement, it is a storytelling tool that communicates the unique identity of the area. This unique feature makes visitors' experiences more engaging and neighborly.

Results

The redesigned website, anchored by the custom illustrated footer, successfully connects with the community and enhances engagement. This personalized touch reinforces the PUD's connection to its community, uplifting its status as a customer-owned utility.

I may not be from Washington, but working on this website made me feel connected to the Pacific County community. We aimed to create a platform that truly serves and reflects the people there. It's rewarding to see how our efforts have streamlined the way residents interact with their PUD, bringing a bit of Pacific County's charm to the online world.
