Domain Name Outbound Transfer Process

Transfer Request Initiation

The client notifies Powerful of its intent to transfer the domain to a new registrar via this form.

Powerful updates the domain registrant contact information at the registrar to reflect the client’s designated ownership details, including:

  • Contact Name
  • Legal Name of Organization
  • Mailing Address
  • Phone Number
  • Email Address

ICANN 60-Day Transfer Lock

Following any change to registrant contact information, ICANN policy imposes a mandatory 60-day transfer lock.

  • This is a security safeguard designed to prevent unauthorized or fraudulent domain transfers.
  • This lock cannot be bypassed or overridden by Powerful.

Domain Unlock + EPP Key Generation (Post-Lock)

After the 60-day lock expires:

  • Powerful unlocks the domain
  • Requests an EPP (transfer authorization) code from the domain registrar
  • The EPP code is automatically sent by the registrar directly to the registrant’s email address (the email address that was provided and updated in the domain records).

Transfer Initiation by Client / New Registrar

The client:

  • Initiates transfer with a new registrar
  • Inputs domain + EPP code
  • Pays transfer fee to new domain registrar (typically one year of registration fees)

Transfer Authorization (New Registrar → Registrant)

The new registrar sends an authorization email to the registrant email on file.

  • The registrant must accept terms and approve the transfer

Final Transfer Window (7-Day ICANN Period)

  • The losing registrar sends a final notice
  • The registrant has 7 days to dispute
  • If no dispute → transfer completes automatically
