Powering a Connected Upper Peninsula
Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) serves a region shaped by close-knit communities, rugged landscapes, and demanding weather. Its website needed to reflect that distinct identity while helping customers connect with essential information and services. UPPCO partnered with Powerful to create an engaging, intuitive experience that guides visitors toward online tools, answers common questions, and supports the company’s commitment to safe, reliable service across the Upper Peninsula.
A First Impression With Purpose
UPPCO serves communities spread across a vast and distinctive portion of Michigan. Customers rely on the company through heavy snowfall, wooded terrain, long distances, and changing seasonal conditions. With such a broad service area, the website offered an important opportunity to connect customers with timely information, essential services, and the people behind the power.
UPPCO selected Powerful’s Premium Design service to create a site shaped specifically around its identity. The UPPCO and Powerful teams collaborated closely on a visual direction that feels bold, established, and distinctly tied to the Upper Peninsula. Deep navy, UPPCO green, and bright gold carry the company’s branding throughout the design, while angled page transitions add movement and energy. Photography of crews, utility equipment, forests, waterways, and local communities keeps the experience grounded in the region UPPCO serves.
The homepage immediately establishes that connection, where an UPPCO crew member appears alongside the statement “Powering Communities.” The message gives the opening screen a clear purpose: UPPCO’s work is about the people and places relying on its service. Nearby buttons for paying a bill, checking outages, requesting new service, and viewing hydro levels turn that introduction into action without forcing customers to search through the navigation first.
The rest of the homepage builds on that foundation by presenting timely information in a focused way. Current news, energy-efficiency programs, renewable energy projects, and company statistics each receive dedicated space rather than competing for attention in one dense section. This pacing gives visitors a reason to continue through the page while helping UPPCO highlight the programs and updates most relevant at that moment. The homepage becomes more than a welcome screen. It serves as a practical starting point that encourages customers to stay informed and complete common tasks online.
Information That Feels Approachable
A strong homepage can earn attention, but the rest of the experience has to keep that momentum going. UPPCO’s goal of increasing engagement was closely tied to its goal of intuitive navigation. Once visitors move beyond the homepage, they need to find important resources quickly, understand the information in front of them, and feel confident about what to do next.
Powerful and UPPCO identified several high-traffic pages where visualization could make that process feel natural. These pages often serve visitors who arrive with a specific question, such as how to start service, which payment option fits their needs, or whether a heat pump could work in the Upper Peninsula. Clear headings, icons, photography, diagrams, and focused content blocks break each topic into manageable steps. Instead of asking visitors to sort through a long page of instructions, the design creates visual cues that guide them toward the information that applies to their situation.
The Start/Stop/Transfer Service and Billing & Payment Options pages apply that approach to 2 of the most common customer needs. The service page immediately separates new and existing customers, making the appropriate next step clear before introducing handbooks, service manuals, and contact information. The billing page gives each payment method and billing program its own space, allowing visitors to scan their choices and move directly to the right resource. That clarity can resolve routine questions online and reduce the need for customers to call or email UPPCO for direction.
The Heat Pumps page shows how visualization can support a topic that requires more explanation. Information follows a purposeful sequence, beginning with how heat pumps work before addressing benefits, cold-climate performance, costs, and available rebates. Diagrams make seasonal operation easy to picture, while videos and highlighted takeaways offer additional context without overwhelming the page. By turning a detailed energy topic into a guided learning experience, the page helps visitors stay engaged long enough to understand the program and decide on a practical next step.
Challenges
UPPCO wanted to encourage more customers to complete routine tasks online, including reviewing billing information, checking outage updates, and accessing service resources. Expanding those digital pathways could make everyday interactions more convenient while helping reduce calls and emails for questions that customers could resolve independently. That opportunity also carried an important responsibility. As more customer activity moved online, UPPCO needed confidence that its website could support those interactions through dependable security practices. Billing and outage information must remain accurate, available, and protected, particularly during moments when customers rely on the site most.
The challenge was to balance accessibility with protection. Online tools needed to feel straightforward enough to encourage participation, while the platform behind them required strong controls for managing access, system changes, and potential incidents. Security could not sit apart from the customer experience. It had to support it at every step.
Solutions
UPPCO selected Powerful’s Premium Website Security and Monitoring service to support its goal of driving more customer activity online. As the website became a larger part of billing, outage communication, service requests, and customer education, UPPCO wanted security measures that could grow alongside that engagement.A key part of that service was Powerful’s SOC 2 Type II audit report, delivered before launch. The report provided an independent review of how Powerful manages website access, updates, monitoring, and response procedures over time. This gave UPPCO more than a list of promised safeguards. It showed that the practices behind the website had been examined by an outside auditor.
Additional protections, including two-factor authentication, traffic monitoring, encrypted form information, and regular data reviews, supported the same goal. By strengthening the website behind the scenes, UPPCO could direct more customers toward online resources while keeping convenience and security closely connected.
Results
The SOC 2 Type II report gave UPPCO added assurance in the security practices supporting its new website. That assurance was especially important as the company encouraged more customers to turn to online billing information, outage updates, service resources, and educational content. This connection between engagement and security helps make the website a dependable extension of customer service. The more customers rely on the site for routine tasks, the more important it becomes for those interactions to be backed by consistent, independently reviewed protections.
The completed website gives UPPCO a strong foundation for expanding digital service while maintaining a thoughtful approach to security. Customers gain convenient access to important tools and information, while UPPCO can continue promoting those resources knowing the website is supported by established safeguards.

UPPCO's customers depend on accurate outage and billing information, so the site can't be an afterthought. Our SOC 2 attestation put our security controls — access management, change control, incident response — in front of an independent auditor, and every tenant on our Premium Security Website Management Platform inherits them.
Since the team opted-in for our premium website design package, we were able to complement their branding by bringing together angular shapes, sharp corners, and dynamic images that make it unmistakably UPPCO. This theme was carried throughout the website and especially shined on their visualized pages, using bold graphics and playful layouts. My personal favorite had to have been the Who We Are page gallery, which gave them the opportunity to showcase their history. This was such a fun project and I’m excited for UPPCO’s customers to experience it!
