Overview

Annual Report, Reimagined

Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative (SSVEC) is a not-for-profit, member-owned electric cooperative serving southeastern Arizona. Guided by the cooperative model, SSVEC’s work centers on reliable service, responsible stewardship, and accountability to the members it serves. That member-first approach shapes how the cooperative communicates, plans, and invests in its communities.

That mindset carried into SSVEC’s continued partnership with Powerful. After bringing its 2024 annual report online, SSVEC continued the approach in 2025 with a clear goal: build on the value of an interactive annual report experience. While annual reports are often distributed as printed booklets at annual meetings or mailed as inserts, SSVEC has continued to expand that format online, giving members another way to access important cooperative information beyond a single meeting or publication. The 2025 annual report microsite was designed to broaden access to key updates, strengthen community connection, present the cooperative as modern and forward-thinking, and make key information easier to explore.

Transparency That Travels Further

An annual report serves a specific purpose within an electric cooperative. It documents the decisions, financials, projects, and priorities that shaped the past year, giving members a clear view of how the cooperative is operating and where it is headed. For a member-owned organization, that visibility is part of the responsibility. It supports informed participation and gives members a strong understanding of the business they collectively own.

SSVEC’s 2025 annual report brings that information into a format with greater reach and long-term value. Board leadership, financial reporting, operational updates, energy resources, and community initiatives are organized into a single digital experience that gives each topic more space and structure than print alone. Moving the report online keeps those updates available beyond one meeting or one mail cycle.

That shift creates more flexibility in how the report is accessed. Visitors who were not in the room for the annual meeting still have access to the same information. Those who want to return to a specific section later can do so without sorting through printed pages. The microsite extends the life of the annual report and keeps it available well beyond the day it was presented.

Its one-page structure also supports a smooth path through the content. A fixed navigation at the top of the page acts as a series of anchor tabs, allowing visitors to jump directly to the section they want to explore. That simple interaction creates a natural flow and gives each section a clear path, making the report easy to navigate from start to finish.

Challenging the Traditional Annual Report Format

SSVEC’s 2025 annual report microsite reflects a more modern approach to member communication. Rather than relying solely on print, the cooperative expanded the annual report into a digital experience that feels more aligned with how people engage with information today.

That decision helps position SSVEC as forward-thinking and responsive to the needs of its audience. A digital annual report signals that the cooperative is willing to rethink familiar formats in favor of something more accessible, engaging, and practical for the people it serves.

The microsite supports that shift through a format that feels structured, visual, and easy to move through. Content is broken into focused sections, imagery helps reinforce key updates, and the overall experience feels more approachable than a traditional printed report. That change helps SSVEC present its work in a way that feels current, thoughtful, and easier to engage with.

It also gives members a useful resource to return to throughout the year. Whether someone wants to revisit financial highlights, review cooperative priorities or better understand the work happening across SSVEC’s service area, the microsite keeps that information within reach. Instead of serving as a one-time report, it becomes an ongoing reference point for the members SSVEC serves.

Challenges

SSVEC’s annual report carries important information, but traditional formats can limit how far that information travels and how easily it can be explored. Printed booklets serve an important role at annual meetings and through mailed distribution, though they come with natural limits once they leave a visitor’s hands. A printed report cannot appear in search results when someone looks for a specific topic online, which makes it harder for visitors to return to key information later.

That same limitation carries over when a printed report is simply uploaded to a website as a PDF. A visitor may still need to download the file, search through multiple pages, and zoom in to read detailed charts or dense copy on a phone. Browser translation tools are less reliable in that format, and accessibility often depends on how the file was built behind the scenes. For visitors relying on screen readers, keyboard navigation, or mobile access, that can create barriers around information that should be easy to reach.

Solutions

To address these challenges, SSVEC restructured its annual report into a microsite. Instead of presenting the report as a static file, each section was translated into web-based content designed for clarity and access. Information lives directly on the page, allowing visitors to engage with it in a more natural way across devices.

The microsite format supports search and discovery. A visitor can search for a topic and land directly on a relevant section. Tools like Google Translate can translate the page in real time, giving visitors more flexibility in how they read and explore the report. On mobile devices, the report adapts to the screen, allowing for smooth scrolling without the need to zoom in and out.

This approach aligns with Powerful’s STAR Standard by making the report searchable, translatable, accessible, and responsive. Each element works together to create an experience that supports a wider range of visitors without adding extra steps.

Results

SSVEC's annual report supports a more accessible experience in practical, everyday ways. A member searching for energy updates can find the page online. A visitor who prefers another language can translate the content through Google Translate. Someone reading from a phone can scroll through the report without pinching and zooming through a PDF. These details may seem small, but they make a big difference in how easily people can engage with the information.

For SSVEC, the result is an annual report that feels less like a one-time publication and more like an ongoing resource. It supports transparency, expands access and reflects the cooperative’s forward-thinking approach to member communication.

Transparency and accessibility - best of both worlds! Creating an Annual Report available from anywhere, developed digitally with all members is mind is the way to go, and the SSVEC team gets it. The industry standard is to publish a paper Annual Report in the monthly magazine or as a program distributed at the Annual Meeting, but an online report breaks down barriers presenting critical co-op information within the STAR (searchable, translatable, accessible, responsive) standard.
