Since 1942, Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) has been a reliable provider of electric and water services, continually expanding to meet the needs of its community. In 1997, SMU added communications services, including cable, internet, and telephone, solidifying its role as a full-service utility provider. With such a diverse range of services, SMU sought a modern, accessible website that would make it easier for customers to navigate their offerings. That’s why SMU partnered with Powerful—to create a website that prioritizes intuitive design, easy navigation, and a visitor-friendly experience, all while reflecting their strong community connection.
Streamlining Navigation for Diverse Services
SMU offers a wide range of essential services—electric, water, and communications—making it crucial that their new website structure was clear and easy to navigate. Through a collaborative process, Powerful worked with SMU to create a logical site structure that prioritizes simplicity while accommodating the complexity of their offerings. The new global navigation allows visitors to learn about SMU, reach customer service, and access each department seamlessly.
Incorporating clear visual cues throughout the site, the design enhances the visitor experience by minimizing steps to reach critical information. Each service is grouped logically, allowing visitors to flow naturally from one area to another without confusion. This intentional design prioritizes ease of use, ensuring that customers can complete tasks with minimal effort.
Building a Cohesive Branding Experience
To highlight their identity, SMU embraced the power of a premium blueprint, allowing for a more customized and branded experience. Powerful helped SMU showcase their distinct colors—red, blue, and orange—throughout the website, which brings a sense of motion and energy as visitors explore the site. The dynamic curve motif (an element pulled from their logo) on the homepage emphasizes this sense of flow, making it both visually appealing and highly engaging for visitors.
The premium blueprint also allowed SMU to creatively express their unique story, using the flexibility of the design to personalize each section of the site. This cohesive branding presents a polished and professional look that resonates with their audience.
The use of familiar colors and bold design elements, like the dynamic curve motif, helps strengthen SMU’s branding across the entire site. By leaning into their red, blue, and orange color scheme, SMU creates a sense of familiarity and trust that aligns with their reputation as a reliable service provider. The premium blueprint gave them the flexibility to creatively showcase their values and offerings in a way that feels personal and community-oriented, elevating their digital presence.

As Spencer Municipal Utilities continues to serve the growing needs of their community, their website needed a more cohesive way to express their local identity. One of the key challenges was finding a way to represent SMU’s community ties in a visual and meaningful way. The design needed to balance utility functionality with a genuine reflection of the local landmarks, people, and history that make Spencer unique. This required a creative solution that would blend both practicality and a strong sense of place. Their goal was to create a digital experience that was clearly rooted in the local community, making their customers feel connected and understood— something that large, impersonal corporations often lack.Solutions
To solve this challenge, Powerful integrated a custom illustrated footer that visually encapsulates the essence of Spencer. This one-of-a-kind footer features iconic local landmarks such as the water tower, the Clay County Fair fairgrounds, the Grand Avenue Bridge, Stolley’s Lake, and even the unique streetlights that line the streets of Spencer. These carefully crafted illustrations serve as a visual reminder of SMU’s deep-rooted connection to the community. By grounding the site in such familiar imagery, Powerful ensures that visitors feel a strong sense of place as they navigate SMU’s services. This design choice reinforces SMU's identity as a local utility provider and helps them stand apart from large, corporate entities.Results
