Overview

About

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) was founded in 1935. While technologies have changed over the years, one thing remains the same: SMECO’s commitment to providing reliable service. Today, SMECO provides power to more than 170,000 members. As a cooperative, SMECO keeps their community at the foundation of their work.

Member-First Strategy

SMECO’s new website exemplifies their mission to “put members first by delivering safe, reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity and related services that exceed expectations.” The member-centric website design was developed around the needs, wants, and behaviors of SMECO’s members. By determining the content, features, and functionality that best fit SMECO’s website visitors, the newly-designed website provides an optimal experience for all.

Engaging Content

In order to deliver relevant information to over 170,000 members, SMECO’s website prioritizes content that attracts and retains website visitors. The newly designed website visualizes web content by breaking down large chunks of text into easily digestible information. Various headers, graphics, and imagery tell SMECO’s story in a unique way. Engaging content also establishes credibility and trust. Visitors are more likely to trust a website with high-quality and informative content, which can lead to increased engagement.

Challenges

SMECO's large service territory requires a website that provides up to date information that keeps their members both informed and engaged. To reach a wide audience, SMECO and Powerful were challenged to convey SMECO's important messages in a clear, concise, and interesting way.

Solutions

Powerful's advanced web design editor allows SMECO's admin to easily edit visualized pages. With a detailed training session on the backend of the website, SMECO employees have the confidence and skills they need to make edits to their website and create a better user experience for their visitors.

Results

SMECO's functional website improves members' online experience by providing a smooth, efficient, and reliable browsing experience. It now saves website visitors time and frustration, keeps them engaged, and builds trust, ultimately leading to increased member satisfaction.

Powerful designed, built, and launched the website in about 6 months. We have been very pleased with the results. The process was smooth, and Powerful supported our go-live with training and follow-up. We are looking forward to a successful partnership for years to come.

Terry Ressler

Corporate Communications Managing Director
