Overview

Powering a Cooperative Experience Online

Randolph Electric Membership Corporation (Randolph EMC) has served central North Carolina for more than 80 years, delivering reliable electricity while staying rooted in cooperative values. Founded in 1938 by nine local visionaries who believed rural communities deserved access to affordable power, Randolph EMC has grown alongside the communities it serves. Today, the cooperative supports more than 34,000 member accounts across 4,500 miles of line, guided by a mission centered on integrity, accountability, innovation, and community involvement.

As Randolph EMC continued to evolve, so did expectations for how members connect with their cooperative online. The team partnered with Powerful to redesign their website with clear goals in mind: increase member engagement, create an intuitive and easy-to-navigate experience, and ensure content stayed timely and accessible. The result is a website that reflects who Randolph EMC is today while honoring the cooperative principles that have guided them since the beginning.

Cooperative Principles in Action

An Interactive View of Democratic Member Control

Randolph EMC’s board plays an essential role in how the cooperative operates. With nine directors representing nine service districts, members have a direct connection to the leadership guiding policies and decisions. To strengthen that connection, Powerful implemented an interactive KML Map that makes district representation clear and easy to explore.

The color-coded map visually distinguishes each of the nine districts within Randolph EMC’s service territory. Visitors can click directly on their area to see which director represents them, simplifying access to this information. This interactive experience directly supports the cooperative principle of Democratic Member Control. By making board representation visible and approachable, the website encourages awareness, participation, and trust. The map reinforces the idea that Randolph EMC is truly governed by its members and that every voice matters.

Making Capital Credits Easy to Discover

Capital credits are a defining part of the cooperative model and a meaningful way Randolph EMC shares financial benefits with its members. To improve access and engagement around this process, Randolph EMC opted into Powerful’s Capital Credits Lookup Tool.

This tool supports the cooperative principle of Members’ Economic Participation by removing common obstacles between members and their capital credits. Rather than scanning lengthy spreadsheets or PDFs, visitors can now search for unclaimed capital credits simply by entering their name. If a match appears, they can select their listing and are guided directly to an online claim form. The process is straightforward, clear, and removes unnecessary steps that might otherwise discourage participation.

Simplifying Everyday Interactions

In addition to increasing engagement, Randolph EMC wanted the redesigned website to feel intuitive for visitors completing everyday tasks. Many important interactions previously relied on downloadable PDFs, which often required visitors to print, scan, email, or navigate external programs to complete a request.

To address this, Randolph EMC opted into Powerful’s interactive form implementation services. Powerful converted a range of commonly used PDFs into online forms, including requests for new service, Youth Tour applications, grant applications, medical support status submissions, bank drafts, and board of director nominations. Each form was designed to guide visitors through the process in a clear, logical way.

This shift from static documents to online forms creates a streamlined experience. Visitors can now complete and submit requests directly on the website without leaving the page or relying on additional software. The forms are accessible, mobile-friendly, and meet Powerful’s STAR Standard, ensuring they are searchable, translatable, accessible, and responsive. For Randolph EMC, this transformation supports faster interactions, fewer barriers for members, and a more intuitive digital experience that reflects the cooperative’s commitment to innovation and service.

Challenges

North Carolina regularly experiences severe weather events that can impact large portions of Randolph EMC’s service territory. Heavy storms, high winds, and rapidly changing conditions often lead to outages that affect thousands of members at once. During these moments, people turn to Randolph EMC for timely, accurate information, often while managing stress, uncertainty, and safety concerns at home. The challenge was ensuring critical information could be found quickly and without distraction during these high-pressure situations.

Another consideration was the surge in website traffic that typically accompanies major weather events. As more visitors arrive seeking updates, outage details, and next steps, clarity becomes essential. Members are not looking for a broad overview of services. They need immediate direction, reassurance, and easy access to tools that help them take action. Randolph EMC saw an opportunity to proactively prepare the website for these moments of urgency by creating a dedicated experience designed specifically for severe weather conditions.

Solutions

As part of Randolph EMC’s Premium Website design package, Randolph EMC and Powerful collaborated on an alternate homepage layout known as “Storm Mode.” This dedicated homepage was designed to be activated during severe weather events, allowing Randolph EMC to shift the website’s focus entirely to outage-related information when it matters most. The layout prioritizes speed, clarity, and ease of use for visitors navigating the site during stressful circumstances.

The Storm Mode homepage intentionally departs from Randolph EMC’s traditional green branding and introduces a bold orange color scheme. This visual shift immediately signals urgency and helps distinguish emergency content from everyday information. The contrasting color palette draws attention to key actions and reinforces that the site is in a different mode, focused on current conditions and real-time updates. Strong visual hierarchy and large call-to-action buttons help visitors quickly understand where to go next.

The page itself is dedicated to all things outage-related. Clear sections guide visitors to report an outage, access the real-time outage map, sign up for text alerts, review medical support status information, and find safety and preparedness resources. By organizing these elements in one place, Randolph EMC can communicate efficiently during periods of high demand. When extreme weather approaches or outages occur, the cooperative has the ability to activate Storm Mode and meet members with information that is direct, relevant, and easy to navigate.

Results

This alternate homepage reflects Randolph EMC’s understanding of local weather realities and the responsibility it carries during times of disruption. The focused design, contrasting color scheme, and clear organization work together to reinforce Randolph EMC’s role as a reliable source of information and support. When the community needs guidance most, the Storm Mode homepage helps Randolph EMC respond with confidence, care, and efficiency.

As Randolph EMC continues to grow, they were going to need a site that was welcoming and had their members in mind. By utilizing both promotional and task-oriented elements in their custom design, they could provide site visitors with easy access to the tasks they complete most while promoting services and events to their newer members. In the event of an outage, we were also able to implement a storm mode homepage that highlights reporting an outage, the outage map, and safety tips, all while maintaining brand recognition in the design. I loved how this site turned out and I can’t wait to see it’s impact on their members!
