Serving Arkansas with Purpose
For more than 80 years, Petit Jean Electric Cooperative (PJECC) has played a steady role in powering rural Arkansas, delivering reliable electric service at fair and competitive rates while supporting the communities it calls home. As a member-owned cooperative, its focus has always extended beyond electricity—investing in local growth, education, and long-term opportunity. That same commitment led to the creation of Petit Jean Fiber, bringing high-speed internet to areas where dependable connectivity was once out of reach. Together, these services reflect a team that understands its community and takes action when needs shift.
As PJECC’s services and reach continued to grow, so did the need for a website that could better support how they serve their members. In partnership with Powerful, the cooperative set out to strengthen transparency, encourage the use of online tools, keep information current, and present a more modern, cohesive presence. The result is a website that works as an extension of their day-to-day operations—helping visitors find what they need, stay informed, and connect with the cooperative in a clear and meaningful way.
Arkansas Roots Meet a Fresh Perspective
As PJECC continues to expand its services and impact, there was a clear opportunity to present itself in a way that reflects that growth. With both electric and fiber offerings shaping how members live and work, the goal was to create a website that feels current, credible, and aligned with where the cooperative is headed– while still feeling familiar to the communities it serves.
To support this, PJECC partnered closely with Powerful to shape a premium design that is both intentional and distinctly their own. The homepage sets the tone with bold visuals and clear messaging, followed by quick-access buttons for essential actions like Pay Bill, Start/Stop Service, and Outage Center. These elements are simple, recognizable, and placed where visitors expect them.
A major part of this design comes through in the department header, which allows PJECC to present both electric and fiber services within one cohesive experience. Visitors can easily move between the two without leaving the site, while each section remains tailored to its specific purpose. This structure creates a clear foundation, helping visitors understand where they are and what actions are available to them.
Building on that foundation, the site utilizes color and styling to further distinguish each service. Rather than blending the two together, the electric side leans into deeper, grounded tones that align with reliability and infrastructure, while the fiber side introduces brighter, more energetic accents that speak to speed and connectivity. These visual cues mirror each service’s logo and identity, giving each its own presence while still feeling part of the same cooperative.
This approach carries through the entire experience. Sections are clearly defined, calls to action are easy to spot, and content is organized in a way that feels natural to move through. Visitors can scroll from service information to news updates to community highlights without feeling lost or overwhelmed. Elements like Current News, Meetings & Events, and featured updates are built into the layout, reinforcing transparency while keeping information visible and relevant.
Keeping Content Current & Easy to Manage
PJECC placed a strong emphasis on keeping their website active and up to date. With regular updates ranging from outage information to community events, they needed a solution that would support frequent changes without slowing their team down.
The department header plays a key role in making this possible. By housing both electric and fiber services within a single backend, PJECC’s team can manage updates in one place rather than juggling separate systems. For example, a service alert, meeting notice, or community update can be added once and reflected where it needs to appear. This setup keeps workflows simple and consistent.
To build on that foundation, PJECC also participated in Powerful’s Content Strategy & Consulting training, led by a team of trusted web experts who work closely with utilities every day. This hands-on session focuses on how content should function in real scenarios—how to write clearly, organize information, and prioritize what visitors need most. For a cooperative managing both electric and fiber communications, this guidance helps bring structure to a wide range of updates, from planned outages and office closures to event recaps and service announcements.
PJECC also invested in Accessibility Consulting and Training with Powerful’s team. Keeping content current is important, but making sure it is accessible is just as critical. This includes thoughtful use of headings, clear language, and design choices that support readability. These practices help ensure that updates are usable for a wide range of visitors, including those using assistive tools.
Together, these efforts create a strong, sustainable approach to content. Updates can be made efficiently, shared with clarity, and accessed by more people. It’s a practical system that supports PJECC’s goal of keeping information timely, relevant, and easy to manage without adding unnecessary complexity for their team.
Challenges
As PJECC looked to increase the use of online tools, there was an opportunity to make common requests easier to complete without requiring a phone call. Many of these interactions—such as checking fiber availability or enrolling in payment programs—are routine, yet often require direct assistance when not clearly supported online. Visitors may not always know where to start, leading them to call for clarification, even when the answer could be provided through the website. At the same time, PJECC offers a range of services that require clear guidance and next steps. Whether someone is exploring fiber for the first time or setting up a payment method, these moments matter. The goal was to create a more intuitive experience that allows visitors to move forward with confidence, while easing the demand on staff handling frequent inquiries.
Solutions
To address this, PJECC implemented KML Map Integration for its fiber services, giving visitors a simple way to check availability on their own. By entering an address directly into the map, visitors can instantly see if they are within the service territory. The map highlights eligible areas and provides a clear visual reference, removing guesswork and helping visitors quickly understand their options. From there, the experience naturally guides visitors to the next step. If service is available, they are directed to resources that help them get started, such as sign-up options and service information. This creates a clear path forward without requiring additional assistance. The map functions as both an informational tool and a starting point, helping visitors move from curiosity to action in just a few clicks.
In addition, PJECC transitioned key PDFs into online forms, making it easier to complete important requests digitally. Forms like the Automatic Bank Draft Application and Advance Pay Prepaid Application can now be filled out and submitted online, eliminating the need to download, print, or return paperwork. These updates simplify the process of setting up convenient payment options, giving members more flexibility in how they manage their accounts.
These updates create a more consistent experience across the site. Whether a visitor is exploring fiber availability or setting up a payment option, the steps feel familiar and easy to follow. Clear prompts, straightforward fields, and guided next steps help reduce uncertainty, especially for those who may not interact with these tools often. This level of consistency builds confidence, making it more likely that visitors will choose to complete tasks online rather than reaching out for assistance.
Results
Together, these updates create a more streamlined experience for visitors. Questions that once required a phone call can now be answered directly on the website, allowing visitors to find what they need and take action without delay. The fiber service map offers clarity at a glance, while online forms provide a straightforward way to complete essential tasks. This shift supports PJECC’s goal of encouraging online engagement while reducing routine inquiries. Visitors are given the tools to move forward independently, and staff can spend more time focusing on complex or high-touch needs. It’s a practical improvement that benefits both sides of the experience.
Over time, these enhancements help reinforce the website as a reliable resource for information and action. By making everyday tasks easier to complete online, PJECC continues to strengthen how it serves its community.

Team Comments
Working with Petit Jean was a fantastic experience for me as a designer. Their team encouraged creativity and prompted us to imagine a new, abstract direction for their web platforms. I’m really glad how the collaboration came together, and I think it led to two beautiful final designs for electric and fiber.
For Fiber, I was inspired by simplicity and visuals indicating strong connection and reliability. This is where the ring concept came from. The ring graphic asset was thoughtfully integrated throughout the home page and other elements of the UI. It’s a subtle asset but it provides a soft, persistent presence to the pages.
For Electric, I wanted to expand on the strong illustration style of the brand logo. The style is natural, organic and bold. I developed a few assets used throughout the site that resemble nature, people and the interesting illustrations that maintain the consistent elements of the original style.
Websites are a perfect channel to spotlight transparency in action, and Petit Jean's new site is proof! The Petit Jean team's goals and clear intensions made the project so fun. With an easy to navigate site structure, website visitors can easily find information and resources while top tasks and relevant information is quickly available on the homepage. The cherry on top is the beautiful, custom design that accentuating the Natural State and provides a launchpad for their brand-new logo.
