Overview

A Forward-Thinking Website Rooted in Community

Ouachita Electric Cooperative Corporation (OECC) is a member-owned electric cooperative built on a simple but powerful idea: 1 neighbor helping another until the entire community is stronger. OECC serves as more than an electric provider. It acts as a community partner, a member resource, and a local organization guided by the 7 Cooperative Principles. As OECC looked toward the future, the cooperative partnered with Powerful to create a website that could increase engagement, encourage online tool adoption, reduce routine phone calls and emails, and reflect its modern, forward-thinking approach to service. The new website gives members clearer paths to everyday information while helping OECC’s team focus on the work that keeps their communities connected, informed, and moving forward.

Online Forms That Keep Community Programs Moving

For OECC, increasing online tool adoption meant looking closely at moments when members, students, families, and community organizations needed to take action. Powerful identified several PDF forms that were strong candidates for online forms, including the NRECA Youth Tour application, Operation Round Up applications for organizations and individuals or families, and the Lineman Training Program Scholarship application. Each form connects directly to OECC’s cooperative role in the community, from supporting local causes to investing in young people and future utility professionals.

The transition from PDFs to online forms gives visitors a clearer, more guided experience. Instead of downloading a file, printing it, filling it out by hand, scanning it, and sending it back, a visitor can complete the form directly from the website. That shift may sound simple, but it removes several small hurdles that often lead to phone calls, emails, incomplete submissions, or abandoned applications. It also makes each form align with Powerful’s STAR Standard: searchable, translatable, accessible, and responsive.

A prospective lineman applying for the Lineman Training Program Scholarship can now move through the process step by step. They can find the application through the website search or navigation, read the requirements, enter their information, provide the requested details, and submit everything in one place. On a phone, tablet, or desktop, the process stays consistent.

The impact reaches beyond convenience. Online forms help OECC reduce manual back-and-forth while giving visitors a more reliable path to completion. For the lineman scholarship, that means helping support the next generation of lineworkers with a process that feels approachable from the first click. For Youth Tour and Operation Round Up, it means making community programs more visible and easier to participate in. It is a practical upgrade with a very cooperative heartbeat.

A Service Area Map That Makes Representation Feel Personal

OECC also wanted to increase engagement across the website. Powerful helped meet that goal by integrating an interactive KML map on the Service Area Map page. In plain terms, the map lets a visitor enter an address and see which district they belong to. The page includes a color-coded key, and each district appears in a matching color on the map, making the experience visual, direct, and easy to follow.

A visitor who enters an address and discovers they are part of District 9 can go a step beyond simply finding a boundary line. By clicking the district, they can see which board member represents that area. From there, they can select the board member and visit a page with more information about that representative. What could have been a static map becomes a path to real people, local leadership, and a deeper understanding of how the cooperative is structured.

That experience reinforces one of the most important parts of cooperative identity: democratic member control. Members are represented by leaders who are accountable to the membership. The interactive map helps make that structure visible. It gives visitors a practical way to understand where they fit within the cooperative, who represents them, and how local leadership connects back to their home, neighborhood, or business.

The result is a website feature that feels useful and personal at the same time. Members can find answers without calling the office, and OECC can present its service area in a way that reflects familiarity, transparency, and community connection. For a cooperative built around neighbors helping neighbors, that kind of clarity is more than a nice website feature. It is part of the mission, mapped out in color.

Challenges

OECC wanted a website that reflected the cooperative’s modern, forward-thinking approach while still feeling grounded in its local identity. The site needed to support everyday member needs, promote important programs, and make high-priority information easier to reach.

The opportunity was to bring several communication goals into one clear experience. Visitors may arrive ready to pay a bill, report an outage, explore ARIS Internet, apply for a program, or learn more about cooperative leadership. Each path needed to feel intentional.

OECC and Powerful also needed to balance promotion with practicality. The homepage had to highlight key services and community programs without feeling crowded. The design needed to guide attention, support action, and reflect OECC’s role as a cooperative built around service.

Solutions

Powerful and OECC collaborated closely to shape the Sunnybrook blueprint around the cooperative’s goal of presenting itself as modern and forward thinking. As a promotional blueprint, Sunnybrook created space for strong visual messaging, high-priority actions, timely updates, and featured services without overwhelming the homepage.

The design makes OECC’s most important member tools visible from the start. The homepage leads with Easy Bill Payment Options, followed by call-to-action buttons for Pay Bill, Quick Pay, Outage Center, ARIS Internet, Become a Member, and Engineering Specifications. This structure gives the site a more current, service-driven feel while helping visitors move quickly toward the tasks they came to complete.

That forward-thinking approach continues through the homepage sections. Outage information is highlighted with a direct path to updates, while energy efficiency programs are promoted with clear copy and a dedicated button. News, announcements, and cooperative statistics give OECC room to share current information, community updates, and organizational impact in a way that feels active rather than static.

The visual direction also supports the modern tone. Branded green and gold accents, curved section transitions, rounded image frames, layered photography, and clean spacing give the site a polished look while keeping the cooperative’s local personality intact.

Results

The finished website gives OECC a stronger platform for member communication and community engagement. Visitors can move from the homepage to essential tools, program information, and cooperative updates with fewer steps.

The Sunnybrook blueprint helps OECC present timely messages in a way that feels organized and approachable. Payment options, outage resources, energy programs, and news are easy to spot, which supports the cooperative’s goal of encouraging more online interaction.

Overall, the design reflects OECC as a cooperative that honors its roots while planning for what members need next. The website feels service-focused, community-minded, and ready to support the everyday work of helping members stay informed and connected.

Being a small co-op, serving a rural community, the Ouachita team needed a website experience that was welcoming for all generations and easy-to-use for both members and employees. By going with the Sunnybrook blueprint, they could achieve an inviting look and feel for their website through the playful, curved lines and muted greens in their color palette. This blueprint also allows the team to highlight top tasks within the first scroll of the page for easy access, as well as keep members informed with a news section that’s easy to update in the backend. One of the more exciting developments of this project though had to have been the Service Area KML Map, which allows for site visitors to search which district they are in and find out who their Director is. Overall, the Ouachita team was a true pleasure to work with and I’m excited for them to share their new digital home with their members!
