Overview

Modern Tools for a Modern Mission

Natchez Trace Electric Power Association (Natchez Trace EPA), a member-owned electric cooperative based in Houston, Mississippi, has powered north central Mississippi communities for decades. With the launch of NT Spark—its broadband subsidiary aimed at delivering high-speed internet to rural homes and businesses—Natchez Trace EPA recognized a need for a unified, streamlined web presence that could support both their electric and fiber services. To better serve their members, reduce day-to-day inquiries, and showcase their deep community roots, they partnered with Powerful to redesign their website into a more functional, modern platform that reflects their forward-thinking approach.

One Website, Two Services

A central feature of the new website is the department header, a navigation tab at the top of every page that allows visitors to toggle between Natchez Trace EPA’s Electric and NT Spark’s Fiber services. This simple but impactful design choice replaced what would have traditionally required two entirely separate websites. Now, instead of switching URLs or starting a new browser tab, visitors can access everything they need—whether electric or fiber—with one unified experience.

To maintain consistency and reduce confusion, both departments share the same Laurelhurst blueprint, offering mirrored navigation structures. However, there’s a subtle yet important design distinction between the two: the Electric homepage uses circular photo frames, while the NT Spark homepage features straight-edged frames. This small visual cue helps visitors recognize the shift in service focus while still feeling anchored within the same organization.

The mirrored layout also makes navigation second nature. Visitors don’t have to relearn how to use the site when switching between departments, and internal staff benefit from managing both sections through a single backend system. It’s a streamlined solution that’s as functional as it is intuitive—simplifying the experience for both members and administrators.

Streamlining Common Tasks With Online Forms

Before the redesign, Natchez Trace EPA’s most common service requests—like starting electric services—relied heavily on downloadable PDFs. These often required printing, scanning, and emailing, creating friction for members and staff. One of the most immediate goals in the redesign was to streamline these tasks through online forms that are simple to complete and manage.

Now, starting service is as easy as visiting the website and filling out a clean, mobile-friendly form. Visitors are guided step by step, with clear instructions and required fields that help reduce errors. Once submitted, the request is sent directly to the appropriate department—eliminating the need for back-and-forth emails or phone calls.

This change is a major improvement in both convenience and efficiency. It supports Natchez Trace EPA’s goal to increase the use of online tools and reduce the volume of phone calls and emails. It’s a big step toward a more modern, self-service experience that puts members in control.

Challenges

As a member-owned cooperative, Natchez Trace EPA has always prioritized transparency and open communication with the people they serve. With members spread across multiple counties and represented by a diverse board, it’s important that every individual knows who speaks on their behalf. However, explaining district boundaries or helping members identify their board representative can be complex. Natchez Trace EPA saw an opportunity to make this information more accessible and engaging by building a clearer connection between board representation and the communities they serve.

Solutions

To support this goal, Powerful integrated an interactive KML map into the new Board Members page. The feature allows visitors to enter their home address and instantly see which district they belong to and which board members represent them. Districts are color-coded and layered onto a live Google Map view, making it easy for members to explore their cooperative’s structure. This addition transforms a simple page into a dynamic, self-service tool that reflects Natchez Trace EPA’s commitment to openness and accountability.

The design goes beyond functionality. It's a thoughtful visitor experience that invites exploration. The use of familiar mapping tools ensures it's easy to use for all ages and devices, while the clean layout and clear legend reinforce clarity. It’s designed to feel approachable, not technical—an important distinction for a community-focused organization.

Results

The map’s functionality adds more than just visual interest—it reflects the cooperative’s deeper values. By making it easy for members to identify their district and representatives, Natchez Trace EPA is reinforcing its mission to stay accessible, member-focused, and financially responsible. The interactive experience encourages engagement, builds trust, and puts power back in the hands of the members. It’s a simple addition with far-reaching impact, helping members feel more informed and connected to the decisions that shape their service. As the cooperative continues to grow, tools like this ensure that members remain at the heart of every conversation.

The team at Natchez Trace EPA was such a pleasure to work with! Through their eager collaboration, we were able to help them create a welcoming visitor experience through a website that was modern and community-driven. Additionally, through the implementation of our forms web app, they are now able to streamline internal processes for service applications. I can’t wait to see how they continue to use these tools to benefit their members.

What a site! The Natchez Trace team had a true vision for their electric and fiber sites, and it was a pleasure working along side them to help bring it to life. With a clear goal of representing their co-op as forward-thinking and with internal buy in, they have gone from using paper to start electric and fiber services to a robust online application process. This site is definitely something the Natchez Trace team can be proud of!
