Overview

Highlighting MLEC’s Legacy & Goals

For over 80 years, Mille Lacs Energy Cooperative (MLEC) has built its reputation on delivering reliable electric and fiber internet services to central Minnesota’s rural communities. Dedicated to staying ahead of members’ needs, MLEC partnered with Powerful to refresh its website. The goal was to modernize its online presence, reduce phone inquiries by encouraging the use of online tools, and offer an intuitive design that reflects MLEC’s forward-thinking approach.

Enhancing Navigation with a Department Header

One of the most significant challenges for MLEC was creating a seamless online experience that catered to both its electric and fiber services. Powerful tackled this with a department header—a navigational tool allowing visitors to toggle between the Electric and Fiber sections with ease. This feature ensures that customers can quickly find information relevant to their needs without navigating multiple websites. This simple yet impactful feature organizes information into clearly defined sections while maintaining a unified browsing experience. Whether visitors are paying their electric bill or exploring fiber internet plans, the department header ensures they can quickly access the resources they need.

By eliminating confusion and making it easy to switch between services, MLEC’s website now provides a more intuitive, streamlined journey. The result is fewer phone inquiries and an online platform that empowers members to find answers independently.

Intuitive Design through Consistency

The success of the department header is amplified by the cohesive design implemented across both the Electric and Fiber sides of the website. Using Powerful’s Laurelhurst Promotional blueprint, the design balances similarity and distinction. Both sections share a similar structure for familiarity, while subtle differences—such as the use of circular imagery on the Electric homepage versus diagonal imagery on the Fiber side—enhance their individual identities.

In addition to layout differences, subtle variations in color schemes further distinguish the Electric and Fiber sections. The Electric side uses warm, earthy tones like deep blues and golds, creating a sense of reliability and tradition that aligns with MLEC’s history as a trusted energy provider. The Fiber side, on the other hand, features brighter, cooler blues and whites that feel fresh and modern, representing speed and innovation in broadband services. These subtle variations make it easy for visitors to differentiate between the two services while keeping the overall look cohesive.

This balance of consistency and differentiation ensures that visitors immediately recognize they are still within MLEC’s website, regardless of which service they are exploring. The impact is a unified yet tailored visitor experience, creating trust and reinforcing the cooperative’s brand as both reliable and forward-thinking.

Challenges

MLEC has always taken pride in its strong ties to the rural communities it serves, from its hardworking linemen and employees to the natural beauty of central Minnesota. When redesigning their website, MLEC wanted to visually communicate this sense of community pride and connection in a way that felt genuine, engaging, and aligned with their identity. MLEC needed something that would authentically represent their community roots while seamlessly aligning with the professional, forward-thinking tone of the overall website.

Solutions

To bring this vision to life, Powerful designed a custom illustrated footer that serves as both a functional design element and a storytelling piece. The footer features rural scenes that resonate with MLEC’s identity, including linemen at work, golden fields of hay, a fishing boat, and a deer grazing near the woods. Powerful listened closely to MLEC and collaborated with them to ensure the design captured their vision. The illustration mirrors the cooperative’s mission by visually connecting their services to the community and landscape they serve. The color scheme of the footer was carefully coordinated with the overall site design, ensuring that it complemented both the Electric and Fiber sections. The deeper blues and golden tones of the footer echo the palette of the Electric side while subtly transitioning into the cooler, modern tones of the Fiber side. This cohesion ties the footer into the broader design, creating a unified visual experience that reinforces MLEC’s dedication to its members and its roots.

Results

The illustrated footer has transformed what could have been a purely functional element into a centerpiece of the website’s design. Not only are visitors provided with a seamless browsing experience, but they are also left with a lasting impression of MLEC’s values and its role in the community.

By integrating the footer with the site’s cohesive color palette and intuitive design, MLEC’s online presence feels both modern and deeply personal. The unified aesthetic across the Electric and Fiber sections creates a smooth browsing experience that reflects reliability, professionalism, and community pride.

As a former cooperative communicator, I know how vital it is to balance authenticity with professionalism in a project like MLEC’s website redesign. We worked closely with MLEC to create a design that honors their deep community roots while showcasing their forward-thinking approach to electric and fiber services. It was a rewarding project that combined authenticity, professionalism, and design.
