Overview

Powering the Future

Kay Electric Cooperative (KEC) has been serving north central Oklahoma for more than 80 years, delivering safe, reliable, and competitively priced electricity. As a member-owned cooperative, they strive to be a trusted partner and resource in their community. When KEC partnered with Powerful, they wanted their website to reflect that commitment. Their goals were clear: create a site that was easy to navigate, increase the use of online tools, and ensure content could be updated quickly to stay relevant.

Taking Paper Out of the Process

One of KEC’s biggest opportunities was encouraging more use of their online tools. Before the redesign, many essential forms—like the Energy Camp application, rebate submissions, and community grant requests—existed only as PDFs. This format worked, but it added extra steps. Members had to download, print, and scan forms, while staff often spent time managing emailed attachments or handwritten entries.

Powerful rebuilt these forms directly into the site as fully digital applications. Visitors can now submit an Energy Camp registration from their phone, or complete a rebate request in just a few clicks. Each form guides the member with clear fields and instructions, and responses are automatically routed to the correct department.

The shift has been transformative. Members no longer face the friction of paperwork, which increases participation in programs like rebates and grants. On the administrative side, submissions are consistent, legible, and ready for action the moment they arrive. By reducing busywork and streamlining communication, KEC has created a smoother experience for both ends of the cooperative relationship.

Staying Current With Every Season

Another priority was ensuring the site stayed aligned with KEC’s evolving communication needs. Their team often needs to shift focus depending on the season or program—rebates in the summer, scholarships in the spring, or backup generators during storm season. A static homepage couldn’t keep up with those changes.

To solve this, Powerful implemented the Springwater promotional blueprint, a flexible homepage design that allows KEC to feature what matters most. Right now, they’re showcasing grant opportunities, rebate offerings, and generator installations, each paired with strong visuals and direct calls-to-action. These promotional sections can be swapped out easily, ensuring KEC can highlight timely priorities without needing outside support or a redesign.

The impact is clear. Members arriving at the site immediately see the most important opportunities, whether that’s saving money, strengthening the community, or preparing for outages. For staff, the blueprint provides peace of mind: they can update messaging when needed, and the site will always reflect current priorities. It’s a simple but powerful way to keep communication fresh and relevant.

Challenges

Kay Electric Cooperative wanted their new website to reflect more than services and tools... It needed to embody the cooperative spirit that defines who they are. Their challenge was finding a way to weave that identity into the website in a way that felt authentic and memorable. Beyond clean navigation and functional tools, KEC hoped the site could remind members that their co-op is deeply tied to local traditions and culture.

Representing a community’s character online can be difficult. Unlike text or logos, which can feel formal, KEC wanted something that felt personal and grounded in place. The challenge was to create a visual element that celebrated what makes their territory unique while also being subtle enough to match the design of the entire website.

Solutions

To meet this challenge, Powerful designed a custom illustrated footer that tells the story of KEC’s community. Instead of using a generic or abstract graphic, the footer brings in familiar imagery that members instantly recognize: the energy of the Wild West rodeo, the fields of agriculture that sustain the region, Willie Wiredhand, and the small-town charm that defines daily life. Together, these elements create a collage of local identity that can’t be mistaken for any other cooperative. This illustration anchors every page, appearing at the bottom as a visual reminder of the cooperative’s roots. More than decorative, it communicates KEC’s values in a way that words alone cannot, integrating heritage and pride into the structure of the site.

Results

The illustrated footer has become a memorable storyteller within the design. Members visiting the site for practical reasons—whether to fill out a form, check for rebates, or read about programs—are also reminded of the cooperative’s connection to the people and places it serves.

By grounding the site in its community, the illustration helps KEC embody the cooperative spirit online. It shows that while the website offers modern tools and up-to-date information, it never loses sight of the traditions, culture, and people at the heart of the cooperative.

Our new website has a fresh, clean & crisp look to it -- exactly what we wanted! Much easier navigation and visitor-friendly. The Powerful team was great to work with! They made the process easier than I imagined and worked with our hectic schedule. They were extremely flexible and worked well with our ever changing timeline! They kept our cooperative up to date and we always felt like we knew exactly what was going on and needed from us! Watching our vision come to life was an awesome experience!

Director of Communications

This was one of my favorite projects! The Kay Electric Co-op team put their members first when planning for their new site and lining out their project goals. The promotional-based blueprint allows the team to showcase relevant programs and offerings for their members to increase awareness and promote online tools. They took a strategic approach with their content to ensure the site was easy to navigate and information was up-to-date and easy to find.
