Overview

A Legacy of Service Meets a Modern Vision

Since 1938, Idaho County Light & Power Cooperative Association has been lighting the way for rural homes, farms, and businesses across north central Idaho. With a mission to be “Your Energy Cooperative,” ICLP continues to evolve with the communities it serves—including how it shows up online. Wanting to better reflect their forward-thinking mindset and make day-to-day tasks easier for their members, ICLP partnered with Powerful to redesign their website. Their top goals: simplify navigation, encourage the use of online tools, and present a modern identity that still felt grounded in their long-standing local roots.

Making Navigation Effortless with Task-Oriented Design

ICLP knew their members often visit the website with a purpose—whether it’s to start service, pay a bill, or look up rebate information. That’s why the new site was built on Powerful’s Deschutes blueprint, a task-oriented design focused on getting visitors where they need to go, fast. From the moment someone lands on the homepage, they’re met with clear, high-contrast buttons that represent ICLP’s most common service requests. These include “Start/Stop Service,” “Pay My Bill,” “Rebates,” and “New Construction.”

These call-to-action buttons are a strategic navigation tool. Without even scrolling, visitors can complete their most important tasks. This approach reflects ICLP’s thoughtful understanding of its community and their needs. Whether someone’s new to the area and looking to establish service or simply paying a monthly bill, the design clears a direct path.

By anticipating top tasks and building them into the homepage, ICLP helps visitors avoid digging through drop-down menus or multiple pages. It’s a design that feels modern yet familiar—built with their community in mind.

Simplified Online Forms

That same task-oriented design that makes navigation intuitive also sets the stage for ICLP’s second major goal: increasing the use of online tools. By placing top member needs front and center, the site guides visitors exactly where they need to go—and makes it easy to take action once they get there.

Take the “New Construction” button, for example. A visitor landing on the homepage can click that button and be brought directly to a robust online form tailored to their needs. From contact details to service size and load specifics, the form walks them through each step clearly and efficiently. There’s no printing, scanning, or second-guessing what information is required—just a simple, straightforward process from start to submission.

This streamlined process supports ICLP’s goal of increasing the use of online tools. By making forms easy to find and even easier to complete, the site encourages more digital engagement and gives visitors a faster way to complete tasks.

Challenges

As a cooperative serving over 3,000 homes, farms, and businesses across North Central Idaho, ICLP holds a unique role—not just as a power provider, but as a neighbor, partner, and trusted source of information. When approaching their website redesign, ICLP recognized the opportunity to make their digital presence more engaging, accessible, and reflective of their cooperative values.

Solutions

To meet these goals, Powerful designed a homepage layout that balances task-oriented functionality with community-focused storytelling. The design makes it easy for visitors to take care of what they came for—like starting service or submitting a form—while also naturally drawing attention to what's new and noteworthy at the co-op. Powered by Powerful’s News Releases app, the "In the Spotlight" section allows ICLP to repurpose their monthly Ruralite stories as online updates. These stories now live on the website as searchable, translatable, accessible, and responsive news posts—bringing relevant content to members in a fresh, easy-to-digest format.

Just below that, the “Meetings, Events, & Closures” section gives members a clear view of what’s coming up. Whether it’s a scheduled board meeting or a holiday office closure, events are displayed in a clean, card-style layout using Powerful’s Calendar & Events app. Visitors can scan the homepage at a glance and walk away with the key dates they need to know

Results

Together, these features have helped transform ICLP’s website. It’s now a place where members can stay connected to the cooperative’s ongoing story. By highlighting Ruralite stories and events on the homepage, ICLP is embracing their role as a community partner and amplifying the spirit of cooperation.

The impact is a website that feels both modern and familiar. It reinforces ICLP’s values by helping members feel informed and included, all while offering an experience that’s intuitive, efficient, and built with their needs in mind. Whether members visit for service or stories, the new site reflects the co-op’s mission to reliably serve their community.

Spanning Idaho County’s breathtaking landscapes, their team envisioned a feature-rich website. They need a robust dashboard so they can facilitate service orders, and make their own site updates as needed. Throughout their training, we appreciated their enthusiasm and intentionality. They are going to love this new website.
