A Modern Take on the Annual Report
Homer Electric Association (HEA) serves communities across Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, delivering reliable electric service while staying closely connected to the people behind each meter. As a member-owned cooperative, HEA prioritizes transparency, communication, and community trust. Their annual report plays an important role in that effort—offering a detailed look at financial performance, operational priorities, and the work happening behind the scenes to keep power flowing.
After partnering with Powerful on their primary website, HEA continued that collaboration to bring the same level of clarity and organization to their annual reporting. Following the launch of their 2024 report microsite, the goal for 2025 was to build on that foundation and continue providing an accessible, well-structured way for members to stay informed, all within a single-page microsite.
Turning Information Into an Experience
HEA’s annual report includes a wide range of information, from financial summaries to community initiatives. The opportunity was to present this depth in a way that feels organized and easy to follow, giving visitors a clear path through the content.
Powerful designed a single-page microsite that organizes the report into structured sections, each guiding visitors through a different part of HEA’s story. Content flows in a logical sequence, with layout shifts and visual breaks that help signal transitions between topics.
Financial information is presented through clean, easy-to-read graphics, including a breakdown of how each dollar is allocated across categories such as fuel, distribution, and administrative costs. This allows visitors to quickly understand key takeaways without needing to sort through dense tables. Supporting sections like “Key Ratios” and “Financial Goals” provide added context, explaining what those numbers mean in a clear and straightforward way.
Photography adds another layer to the experience. Images of HEA crews, local landscapes, and everyday moments reflect the communities they serve. These visuals, paired with subtle interactive elements and consistent spacing, create a steady rhythm as visitors move down the page.
The result is a report that feels approachable while still offering depth. Visitors can quickly scan for highlights or take time to explore each section in detail. This structure supports stronger engagement and helps ensure key information is easy to find and understand.
Accessible Beyond the Annual Meeting
Annual reports are often introduced at the annual meeting as printed booklets, with a digital version shared later as a PDF. While familiar, those formats can be limiting. Information is tied to a single moment, and revisiting specific details later often means flipping through pages or searching through a downloaded file.
After launching a microsite for their 2024 report, HEA continued that approach for 2025. The goal was to build on that momentum and provide a format that keeps the report easy to access, simple to navigate, and available whenever members need it.
The 2025 annual report microsite was designed to exceed Powerful’s STAR Standard: Searchable, Translatable, Accessible, and Responsive. The experience is built to support a wide range of needs. Content can be translated into different languages when needed, while readable typography, strong contrast, and a logical structure support accessibility and assistive technologies. The microsite also adjusts across devices, allowing members to read through the report on a desktop or quickly reference a section from their phone. Whether someone is revisiting financial highlights after the annual meeting or checking a detail later in the year, the report remains easy to access and easy to move through.
A member who attends the annual meeting can revisit the report later without relying on a printed copy. Another visitor can quickly pull up the microsite to check a specific detail without downloading a file. The report becomes something that can be referenced throughout the year, not just during a single event.
This approach gives the annual report a more practical role over time. It remains easy to find, easy to navigate, and available whenever members need to revisit key information.
Challenges
HEA’s annual report carries more than operational updates. It reflects the people, programs, and partnerships that shape the cooperative. The opportunity was to ensure those elements were clearly represented throughout the experience. Community initiatives, local involvement, and member-focused programs needed to feel present and intentional across the report.Presenting that balance required careful consideration. Financial data and leadership updates are essential, but they do not fully capture the role HEA plays across the Kenai Peninsula. The challenge was to give equal weight to the cooperative’s impact within the community while maintaining a clear and organized structure.
There was also an opportunity to reflect the cooperative principles in a way that feels natural. Member participation, community investment, and shared benefit are central to HEA’s identity. The report needed to show those values through the content itself, rather than relying on broad statements.
Solutions
The microsite introduces a layout that gives community content a defined presence throughout the report. Sections highlighting scholarships, youth programs, and local initiatives are presented alongside operational updates, making them part of the overall story rather than separate highlights. This approach allows visitors to see how HEA’s work extends beyond service delivery.Content is supported by visuals that reflect the communities HEA serves. Photography featuring local landscapes, crews, and everyday moments adds context to each section. These images are not decorative. They help connect the information to real people and places, reinforcing the cooperative’s role within the region.
The flow of the report also supports this balance. Leadership messaging introduces key themes, followed by financial insights that provide transparency. Community-focused sections then show how those resources are put into action. This progression creates a clear connection between decisions, operations, and local impact.
Results
The new microsite presents a report that feels grounded in both performance and purpose. Community impact is visible throughout, giving members a better understanding of how HEA operates and who it serves. Programs and initiatives are easier to recognize as part of the cooperative’s ongoing work. This approach allows the cooperative principles to come through in a more direct way. Member benefit, local investment, and community connection are reflected across multiple sections, rather than being confined to a single message. The report shows how those values are carried through day-to-day operations.
The result is a report that feels representative of HEA as a whole. Members can see both the numbers and the outcomes tied to them. It strengthens the connection between the cooperative and the community while supporting a deeper understanding of HEA’s role across the Kenai Peninsula.

Team Comments
With this year’s Annual Report, the team at HEA had a clear vision from the start. With the goal of showcasing their employees and their involvement in the community, we wanted to make sure to incorporate lots of photos but in a way that flowed together seamlessly without becoming overwhelming. Through the use of gradient overlays and distinct boxes for larger chunks of information we were able to accomplish a unique relationship between photos and text that looked intentional, yet playful. Overall, this was such a fun design to work on and I hope that employees and members are able to look back on all of the great accomplishments they’ve had within the cooperative!
