Overview

Continuing a Trusted Partnership

Habersham Electric Membership Corporation (HEMC) has been powering Northeast Georgia since 1938, with a commitment to delivering reliable electrcicty and supporting its members through cooperative principles. As a member-owned organization, HEMC understands the importance of keeping its digital presence as dependable and accessible as its service. Having partnered with Powerful on their previous website, HEMC returned for a refresh—this time with a focus on streamlining navigation, increasing the use of online tools, and presenting themselves as a modern, forward-thinking cooperative.

Navigation Built for Members First

When HEMC set out to refresh their site, easy navigation was a top priority. Members rely on the website to access critical tools—such as outage maps, bill pay, and energy efficiency resources—quickly and without confusion. To meet this need, Powerful implemented the Springwater blueprint, a promotional, member-focused design framework that intuitively organizes content and visually prioritizes the most important resources.

One of the most prominent features of the new design is the homepage hero section. At launch, this section highlights HEMC’s upcoming Annual Meeting, one of the most important events for any electric cooperative. Placing this front and center reinforces democratic member control—reminding members of their role in shaping the co-op’s future, voting on key issues, and connecting with leadership and fellow members. This strategic placement aligns with HEMC’s commitment to transparency, participation, and keeping members informed.

This strategic placement also reinforces HEMC’s community-minded approach. By promoting the meeting alongside engaging imagery and a direct link to details, the homepage encourages attendance and deepens members’ connection to their cooperative—both of which strengthen long-term trust and engagement.

Showcasing a Modern and Forward-Thinking Cooperative

Although HEMC’s previous site was effective, even the best websites require updates to stay aligned with changing technology and evolving audience expectations. This redesign maintains HEMC’s established color palette and logo while refining typography, spacing, and design elements for a cleaner, more contemporary look.

Modernization also meant taking a thoughtful approach to content strategy and messaging. Powerful’s team collaborated closely with HEMC to identify what information mattered most to members and where it should live. The result is a homepage that balances timeless cooperative messaging with timely updates, giving HEMC the flexibility to promote current initiatives, spotlight community partnerships, and share safety tips—all while staying true to their cooperative identity.

Another forward-thinking element is the mobile-first design approach. With more and more members accessing the site from their phones, the redesign ensures that outage updates, bill pay tools, and safety resources are just as easy to find and use on smaller screens. This kind of accessibility is a reflection of HEMC’s commitment to serving members efficiently.

Challenges

One of the unique responsibilities of a member-owned cooperative is returning capital credits to its members. For HEMC, this has always been an important way of demonstrating Members’ Economic Participation—a core cooperative principle. However, the process of locating and claiming credits wasn’t always simple. Members often had to sift through spreadsheets, or reach out by phone, which could be time-consuming. HEMC needed a way to honor the cooperative model while reducing barriers for their members.

Solutions

Powerful worked with HEMC to integrate the Capital Credit Lookup tool directly into their redesigned website, turning a previously cumbersome process into an intuitive, member-first experience. The tool allows visitors to simply type in their name to check for unclaimed capital credits—bringing transparency and accessibility to the forefront. If their name appears, members can immediately complete a secure online form to begin the claim process. This reduces paperwork, speeds up response times, and removes the uncertainty that once surrounded unclaimed credits.

The Capital Credit Lookup tool and form were designed to work together as one seamless process. Members don’t have to juggle phone calls, paperwork, or multiple steps. The convenience of searching and submitting an inquiry in the same visit makes the experience both efficient and reassuring.

Results

The Capital Credit Lookup tool and form have transformed the way members interact with this important cooperative benefit. Instead of a task that once required time and effort, members now enjoy a straightforward, empowering experience. The tool brings to life the principle of Members’ Economic Participation, giving individuals an easy way to check for unclaimed credits, while the form ensures those credits can be claimed without added barriers.

By highlighting the value of ownership in a practical, visitor-friendly way, the site encourages greater reliance on online tools and strengthens trust in HEMC as both a hometown partner and a modern cooperative.

The Habersham team had a clear vision of transforming their Powerful task-oriented site into a site that allows for spotlighting programs and initiatives. Going with the Springwater promotional-based blueprint, they can meet their communications goals of connecting to their members through showcasing themes, program offerings and strategic communication efforts.
