Overview

A New Look for a Familiar Local Partner

Grundy Center Municipal Utilities (GCMUNI) has served its community for generations, growing from local electric service into a municipally owned provider of electric, internet, cable and phone service. With roots that trace back to the late 1800s and a service model built on local accountability, GCMUNI wanted a website that reflected both its history and its role in everyday life today. The team partnered with Powerful to refresh its design, organize a wide range of services with intuitive navigation and keep important updates visible for customers. The redesigned website gives GCMUNI a polished online home that feels practical, dependable and local, much like the utility itself.

Building a Brand That Feels Distinctly GCMUNI

GCMUNI entered the website redesign with an opportunity to define its identity with more consistency across every customer touchpoint. As a municipally owned utility with deep local roots, its brand needed to feel dependable, approachable and distinctly tied to Grundy Center. Powerful’s Brand Identity Package helped GCMUNI tune into the principles already guiding its work: locally owned and operated, serving homes and businesses, and focused on dependable, straightforward service.

Powerful and GCMUNI collaborated closely to develop a new logo, branding concepts and a visual identity that could represent the utility’s full story. The final logo brings together GCMUNI’s electric foundation, communication services and local connection in a way that feels modern but still familiar. The bold “G” ties the identity directly to Grundy Center, while the lightning-inspired detail points to the utility’s roots in electric service. Rounded elements add a sense of movement and connection, offering a subtle nod to internet, cable and phone service.

The color palette adds another layer of meaning by reflecting both GCMUNI’s services and its values. Orange brings energy to the identity and creates a natural connection to electric service. Teal and green help represent the communication side of GCMUNI’s work, including internet, cable and phone service, with visual cues that feel connected, clear and community-focused. Blue gives the full system a dependable foundation, reinforcing the trust customers expect from a local utility. Brown grounds the palette with a sense of history, stability and long-term service.

Powerful also created a style guide and branded templates for social media, business cards, letterhead, envelopes and presentations. These pieces help GCMUNI carry the same professional identity across everyday communication, from printed materials to online updates. The result is a brand system that does more than refresh the website. It gives GCMUNI a consistent way to show up in the community, build trust and present itself as a modern utility with deep local roots.

Making Multiple Services Simple to Explore

GCMUNI provides a wide range of essential services, including electric, internet, cable and phone. That range is a strength, but it also makes organization especially important. Visitors may arrive looking to start electric service, compare internet packages, pay a bill, review cable options or find phone information. The website needed to guide each person to the right place without making them dig.

Powerful’s task-oriented Deschutes blueprint helped shape the homepage around common customer needs. The top of the page features clear action buttons for Start/Stop Service, Electric Rates, Pay Your Bill, Billing Options and Report an Issue. These shortcuts place frequent tasks front and center, giving visitors direct paths to the information they likely came to find.

The homepage also introduces GCMUNI’s core service areas through a “Services for the Community” section. Electric, internet, cable and phone each receive their own card with a short description, image and action button. This structure gives every service a defined space while keeping the overall experience clean and balanced. A visitor can quickly understand what GCMUNI offers, then move into the service area that fits their need.

That organization supports both the visitor experience and GCMUNI’s communication goals. Instead of treating the website like one large information folder, the design acts more like a helpful front desk. It points people toward the next step, highlights the utility’s full service lineup and presents each offering with clarity. For a municipal utility serving both homes and businesses, that kind of structure helps everyday interactions feel simple from the start.

Challenges

For GCMUNI, featuring up-to-date content was an important part of creating a more helpful website experience. As a local utility providing electric, internet, cable and phone services, the team regularly has information to share that affects customers’ day-to-day routines. Holiday hours, office updates, service changes and community notices all need a clear place to live.

The opportunity was to make timely communication feel organized and easy to find. GCMUNI needed a structure that could support different types of updates without making the homepage feel crowded. A customer looking to pay a bill or review service options should still be able to spot important announcements.

That balance is especially important for a municipally owned utility. Customers often turn to GCMUNI’s website for practical, local information from a team they know and trust. The redesigned site needed to support that relationship by making current updates feel accessible, visible and connected to everyday service.

Solutions

Powerful’s News Releases web app gives GCMUNI a dedicated way to publish timely updates and keep important announcements organized. Instead of placing short-term notices throughout different pages, the app creates one consistent location for news. This helps the team share updates in a format that feels clean, familiar and easy to follow.

On the homepage, recent posts appear in the “In the Spotlight” section with a date, image and headline. This visual format helps announcements stand out while still fitting naturally into the overall design. Visitors can quickly see what is new, then click into a full post for additional details.

GCMUNI can share a wide range of updates through this feature, including holiday hours, construction at the main office and changes in its cable TV provider. Each post gives the team room to explain what is happening, who it affects and what customers may need to know next. The “More News” button also creates a simple path for visitors who want to browse past announcements.

Results

With News Releases built into the redesigned website, GCMUNI has a more dependable place for timely communication. Updates no longer feel separate from the overall website experience. They now have a clear home that supports the utility’s goal of keeping content current and useful.

For visitors, the homepage provides a quick snapshot of what is happening at GCMUNI. A customer can check for holiday office hours, learn about temporary construction impacts or review a cable provider update without searching through unrelated content. That visibility helps the website feel active and relevant.

For GCMUNI, the feature supports a more consistent communication rhythm. The team can continue sharing timely updates in a way that feels polished, practical and true to its straightforward service approach. Over time, that helps strengthen trust and reinforces the website as a reliable resource for the community. Together, these updates help GCMUNI keep customers in the loop while reinforcing the local accountability and dependable service that have shaped the utility for generations.

I now feel very confident in managing the site. The overall experience was top notch. From the very first introductory Zoom call to quick responses to emails to thorough training, the experience we've had with Powerful has been absolutely positive and easy. I always felt like we were the only customers. The Powerful team is very attentive. If you are looking for a professional, knowledgeable and attentive team that offers a seamless transition from either an existing website or starting from scratch, Powerful is the company for you. Thank you for helping us design our utility website. It's amazing.

Designing the refreshed identity for Grundy Center Municipal Utilities was a unique opportunity to rethink what a utility brand can look like. The GCMUNI team came to us looking for an identity that clearly felt like a utility brand without relying on the overly traditional visual language often associated with the industry. That challenge led to a modern, energized mark that reflects both their foundational utility services and the connectivity of their communication offerings. We’re proud of how the final identity balances innovation, community, and long-term versatility!
