A Modern Platform Rooted in a Rich Legacy
Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative (GCEC) has a long history of serving its community, with roots tracing back to the early days of the Rural Electrification Act. Since 1937, they’ve upheld a mission to deliver exceptional service at the lowest possible cost. As their service area grows and their members become increasingly digital, GCEC wanted a new way to connect with its audience—especially through its longstanding partnership with Texas Co-op Power Magazine. GCEC partnered with Powerful to design a sleek, easy-to-use microsite that highlights their monthly magazine issues and showcases the stories that matter most to their members. Their goals were clear: present the co-op as modern and forward-thinking, increase engagement, and keep their content current and accessible.
Making Stories Click
Each month, Texas Co-op Power Magazine covers a range of topics—member stories, energy efficiency tips, event recaps, and more. However, simply uploading a PDF or linking to an external page wasn’t cutting it anymore. Powerful designed a clean, organized layout that showcases each issue in a magazine-style grid, with vibrant cover images and intuitive navigation.
The Previous Issues archive offers a clean, scrollable grid that showcases each month’s magazine cover like a virtual bookshelf. Each issue is labeled by month and year, making it easy for visitors to find the edition they’re looking for. Clicking into an issue opens a dedicated landing page where each article is displayed as its own post, complete with a title, thumbnail image, and brief summary. Visitors can choose to dive into a specific story or explore the full issue at their own pace.
This approach transforms the reading experience into something more engaging and accessible. Whether someone wants to revisit a past feature on local linemen, browse energy-saving tips, or catch up on youth program spotlights, the content is easy to search, click, and read. Since the site is fully mobile-friendly, members can enjoy it from their phone or tablet just as easily as from a desktop. It’s storytelling designed with the reader in mind—clickable, shareable, and built for modern attention spans.
An Extension, Not an Afterthought
The magazine microsite was designed with GCEC’s existing brand in mind, using a similar color scheme and visual style to create a smooth, consistent experience for visitors. While the layout is distinct, it still feels familiar—maintaining a cohesive connection to the main website without feeling like a departure. This attention to detail helps members feel grounded as they navigate between platforms, reinforcing GCEC’s identity at every click.
The microsite expands GCEC’s digital presence in a meaningful way, offering a dedicated space to celebrate stories and share timely content. It’s not just an archive—it’s a branded extension that supports the co-op’s communication goals while delivering a visitor-friendly experience that feels true to who they are.
By combining intuitive design with easy-to-manage tools, the microsite gives GCEC the flexibility to keep members informed and engaged with minimal lift. It strikes the right balance between function and storytelling—offering a reliable, up-to-date space for members to connect with the cooperative beyond billing or service updates. As GCEC continues to grow and evolve, the magazine microsite stands as a testament to their commitment to communication, community, and innovation.
Challenges
One of GCEC’s key goals for the microsite was to ensure that content would stay fresh and relevant month after month. With new stories from Texas Co-op Power Magazine arriving regularly, their team needed a system—and the confidence—to keep up with the pace of publishing. It wasn’t just about adding new posts, but about maintaining a consistent flow of information that reflects their commitment to keeping members informed and engaged. The challenge was making sure everyone felt comfortable with the tools, understood the process, and could manage the site efficiently without needing technical expertise.Solutions
To support this goal, Powerful hosted a collaborative training session tailored specifically to GCEC’s content update needs. The training walked their team through the full publishing process—from uploading new stories and setting featured images to organizing the archive and updating monthly issue pages. Everything was covered in real-time, with hands-on examples and room for questions, ensuring the process felt approachable and doable. The training also came with a recorded walkthrough and a clear reference guide, so team members could revisit the steps as needed. More than just a tutorial, it gave GCEC the tools and knowledge to confidently manage the microsite moving forward. The focus was on long-term sustainability—empowering their staff to keep content flowing smoothly without relying on outside help for every update.
Results
Since the training, GCEC has been able to successfully manage and maintain the magazine microsite in-house. New stories are published each month, keeping the site fresh and giving members a reason to return regularly. The internal team now has a clear rhythm and structure for keeping content up to date, which supports the co-op’s overall goal of staying connected to its community in real time. The result is a platform that’s active and consistently current. This reflects GCEC’s commitment to timely communication and member engagement. The training gave their team a head start, and now they’re running with it—turning monthly updates into a reliable, repeatable routine that keeps their digital storytelling going strong.
