Overview

About

Golden Valley Electric Association (GVEA) recognizes its importance as an economic, environmental, and social contributor to the communities it serves. GVEA’s mission is “to safely provide its member-owners with reliable electric service, quality customer service, and innovative energy solutions at fair and reasonable prices.” To fulfill this mission, GVEA manages and maintains a vast infrastructure that includes 3,261 miles of transmission and distribution lines, 35 substations, and 9 generating facilities.

Defining Goals

While approaching this website redesign project, GVEA and Powerful collaborated to define the goals, ambitions, and direction of the new website design. One of GVEA’s top priorities included making authentic connections with their members online. To foster a sense of trust amongst their members, the new website needed to reflect GVEA’s values and personality through transparency.

Creating Connections

Upon visiting GVEA’s website, members are greeted with a video in the top hero section of the website. This compelling video showcases their high-quality services and dedicated employees. Various shots highlight GVEA employees’ hard-work and commitment to their community. The video embodies GVEA’s essence of “Members Serving Members”. As a result of this video, GVEA can create lasting, emotional connections with their website visitors.

Pictures say a thousand words, but videos can say even more. GVEA’s video in the hero section conveys a wealth of information in a short amount of time. By utilizing a video on the homepage, this dynamic medium has the ability to capture visitors’ attention more effectively than a static image or text.

Sharing the Story, Every Month

By repurposing local content from Ruralite magazine for web, we provided GVEA members with the ability to engage with the content in different ways, maximizing their engagement level with GVEA’s messaging. This also ensured the content was searchable, translatable, accessible, and responsive, allowing members to easily access the information they need, when they need it, from any device. Overall, this approach helped to enhance GVEA’s member experience and fostered stronger community connections.

Challenges

Creating a website that authentically connects with visitors can be difficult. Both Powerful and GVEA team members were challenged to dive deep into understanding and defining GVEA's brand, voice, and messaging. To make authentic connections, GVEA needed to create content that reflects their brand and resonates with members.

Solutions

To garner a greater perspective of GVEA's audience, Powerful and GVEA conducted research and gathered data to gain insight into GVEA members' motivations, interests, and pain points. With a deep understanding of member needs, Powerful strategized content to effectively and authentically engage with members.

Results

As a result of authentic website content, GVEA builds trust and credibility with its members. The newly-designed website reflects the honest values and personality of GVEA. By establishing trustworthiness and reliability, the website creates a sense of community and cultivates a connection between GVEA and its members. Website visitors are now more likely to feel that GVEA understands their personal needs and values.

As the Powerful's Website Architect for Golden Valley Electric Association, I have had the pleasure of working closely with Grace, Ashley, and Meadow to create a website that truly puts members first. By implementing a task-oriented homepage layout and improving accessibility, we were able to make the site humanized, making top member tasks priority one. Additionally, repurposing the Ruralite magazine content each month has helped to showcase local stories front and center on the homepage, providing an even more member-focused experience. It's been fantastic to see GVEA benefit so greatly from these changes.
