Overview

Empowering Military Families Through Digital Connection

Five & Thrive exists to strengthen military families by tackling the top five quality-of-life issues that affect service members and their loved ones: childcare, education, healthcare, housing, and spouse employment. With more than 100 organizations amplified, 4,000+ leaders empowered, and 530,000+ social impressions to date, Five & Thrive’s impact reaches far beyond individual households.

To match the scope and significance of their mission, Five & Thrive partnered with Powerful to redesign their website. Their vision: a modern, forward-thinking platform that was intuitive to navigate, deeply community-centered, engaging to explore, and capable of consistently featuring fresh content. The result is a site that reflects their role as a trusted, innovative leader in military family support while remaining grounded in the everyday stories of resilience that fuel their mission.

Keeping Pace With Military Life

Military life moves quickly. Families relocate every few years, policies shift with new legislation, and emerging issues like childcare availability or housing costs demand constant attention. Five & Thrive needed a website that could keep pace with this reality– a site that functioned less like a static library and more like a dynamic hub where visitors could reliably find timely, actionable updates.

The benefit of Powerful’s premium design was the flexibility to truly create something unique and tailored to Five & Thrive’s needs. Situation Reports, or SITREPs, now have a dedicated section that draws the eye and invites engagement. Instead of being tucked away or difficult to locate, SITREPs are presented as a recurring feature families know they can count on. This intentional placement allows visitors to access monthly updates with ease, whether they are looking for information on childcare shortages, spouse employment challenges, housing affordability, or new Department of Defense actions that could affect their lives.

Equally important are the Spotlights, which highlight the extraordinary contributions of military spouses. These stories, now displayed with the same prominence as SITREPs, transform the homepage into more than just a resource center—they make it a place where families can see themselves represented. Visitors are drawn in by approachable imagery and concise previews that encourage further reading, turning the homepage into an ongoing touchpoint for both information and inspiration.

By designing SITREPs and Spotlights seamlessly into the homepage, Powerful created a rhythm of fresh, relevant content that feels intuitive to access. The structure ensures that no matter when a visitor arrives, they can trust the site to deliver both timely updates and meaningful stories.

Nationwide Reach, Local Connection

Five & Thrive’s community spans every branch of service and stretches across the globe. Yet no matter the distance, they wanted their site to remind families that they are united in shared experiences. They needed a design element that could visually embody this connection.

Powerful crafted a custom illustrated footer that reflects the depth of military life. The artwork includes silhouettes of service members standing alongside families, children playing, jets soaring overhead, and ships on the horizon– capturing both the strength of the armed forces and the humanity of those who serve beside them. Importantly, it represents all branches.

More than decoration, it is intentional storytelling. The footer reminds military personnel they belong to something bigger, no matter where they are stationed. It visually ties together service, sacrifice, and home, reinforcing Five & Thrive’s mission to make families feel connected and supported. Visitors scrolling through resources end their journey with a reminder of who they are and why they matter. For an organization whose vision is “a culture where all military families thrive,” this illustration delivers that message in a single glance.

Challenges

Five & Thrive’s mission is to advocate for and improve the quality of life for military families, tackling issues such as childcare, education, healthcare, housing, and spouse employment. With such a wide range of focus areas, one of their biggest challenges was ensuring that families could quickly find and act on the resources they needed most. Families often move every few years, face inconsistent access to local services, and juggle competing demands. Without a central point of entry, locating relevant programs or support often required navigating multiple organizations and websites—a process that could feel overwhelming in an already demanding lifestyle.

At the same time, Five & Thrive wanted to increase engagement across their platform. As a grassroots initiative, they knew the importance of making their work visible and accessible. They needed a way to consolidate the diverse resources they had cultivated into one location that would both empower families and strengthen connections with military leaders and community partners. The challenge wasn’t in the lack of available resources—it was in organizing and presenting them in a way that felt seamless, intuitive, and supportive for every visitor.

Solutions

Powerful addressed this need by leveraging their Resource Directory web app. It serves as a centralized hub for all of Five & Thrive’s quality-of-life efforts. This feature allows visitors to filter by category and location, making it easy to pinpoint the support they need. For example, a family stationed in Oregon searching for childcare resources can choose the childcare category, type in their state, and instantly see a list of relevant organizations. Each listing links directly to an external site, ensuring a smooth, uninterrupted experience for visitors. This simple but powerful functionality helps reduce frustration and gets families connected with solutions faster.

The Resource Directory also reflects Five & Thrive’s role as a connector. Instead of asking families to sift through endless search results or navigate government sites alone, the directory positions Five & Thrive as a trusted guide.

Results

The Resource Directory has become a vital touchpoint in helping Five & Thrive fulfill their mission. By consolidating information in one convenient location, the site now empowers families to take quick action on issues that directly impact their quality of life. It also fosters engagement. Families return knowing they will find updated, practical support, while leaders and partners see their initiatives amplified through inclusion in the directory. The impact goes beyond individual searches; it reinforces Five & Thrive’s larger goal of reducing stressors, empowering families, and strengthening the resilience of the military community. With each connection made, the site moves closer to Five & Thrive’s vision of a culture where all military families thrive.

We all have some kind of connection to the military—through family, friends, or neighbors—and that connection makes this project deeply meaningful. Working alongside Five & Thrive to design a platform that highlights their advocacy and the incredible resilience of military families has been such a rewarding experience. I’m proud we could create something that will continue to support and connect military families for years to come.
