Overview

A Website That Reflects a Clean Energy Mission

Energy Northwest is a joint operating agency serving 29 public power utilities across Washington, uniting municipal and PUD members to deliver clean, reliable, and carbon-free electricity. With a focus on safety, stewardship, and leadership across all levels, the organization plays a crucial role in generating power from nuclear, wind, hydro, and solar sources. Their website needed to support that level of trust and professionalism. Energy Northwest partnered with Powerful to redesign their site so it aligns with their core mission of providing safe, reliable, cost-effective energy while supporting their vision of leading the clean energy transformation. Their goals centered around intuitive navigation, current and accurate content, and a strong commitment to accessibility.

Reliable Information for Utilities, Partners & Communities

As a joint operating agency, Energy Northwest serves a wide audience—public power utilities, regional partners, policymakers, job seekers, and the general public. These groups rely on accurate information regarding investor relations, clean energy initiatives, community programs, and operational activity. Excellence in performance and leadership at all levels are core values of Energy Northwest. To demonstrate those values online, they needed a website that consistently delivered timely and relevant information. When a community depends on an organization, the online experience should share that same sense of reliability.

Energy Northwest selected Powerful’s Premium Website Design to ensure the site could be shaped to reflect their identity and communication priorities. The premium approach allowed for custom layouts and visual elements that align with their forward-thinking energy mission. The homepage places recent news items in a prominent location, helping visitors stay informed on active projects and achievements. Promotional sections highlight clean energy efforts and career opportunities, supported by bold photography and concise messaging. Elements such as the video hero, the “4.4 million metric tons” statistic, and the image grids reinforce transparency and progress. These design decisions help current information stand out and reduce the risk of important updates being overlooked.

Timely content strengthens visitor trust and reflects the dependable nature of Energy Northwest’s operations. When an organization provides reliable power, its website should offer reliable information. Clear placement of news and project highlights encourages return visits, because visitors know the content is kept current and relevant. The Premium Website Design supports their goals by presenting information in a way that is visible, structured, and aligned with their leadership role in the region. By prioritizing current content, Energy Northwest reinforces its commitment to excellence and demonstrates the same readiness and accountability online that they pursue in the public power sector.

Intuitive Navigation Rooted in Visitor Needs

Building on the customized Premium Website Design, Energy Northwest also focused on making the content feel just as intuitive as the visuals. The design had established a modern, forward-thinking foundation, so the structure of the information needed to match that same energy. Powerful collaborated with Energy Northwest on a detailed content strategy that centered on clarity, ease of navigation, and visitor engagement. Several important pages were selected for high-touch and visualized enhancements based on their traffic and the type of information their audience frequently seeks.

High-touch enhancements were applied to pages such as Community Engagement and Partnerships, Energy Projects, and Investor Relations. These pages contain dense, high-value content that utilities, partners, and policymakers often return to. The goal was to break down large sections of text into formats that were easier to scan. Bullet points, short headings, grouped content, and clear introductory statements helped remove unnecessary barriers. Visitors can now locate the information they need without sorting through long paragraphs.

To take the strategy further, other key pages were redesigned as visualized pages. Careers, Services, and Who We Are apply visual elements such as icons, sectioned layouts, and photography to guide visitors through content in a more engaging way. These pages hold content relevant to job seekers, community members, and collaborators. Visual design helps simplify the information and creates a more enjoyable browsing experience. Studies consistently show that pages with visual guidance hold attention longer and support better comprehension.

Together, the high-touch and visualized enhancements contribute to Energy Northwest’s goal of intuitive design. High-touch pages support clarity for dense information, while visualized pages increase engagement through graphic cues and layout structure. The result is content that is easier to navigate and aligns with Energy Northwest’s clean energy mission and leadership values. Visitors can find what they need quickly and enjoy a smoother experience, which supports trust and encourages return visits.

Challenges

Energy Northwest entered the redesign with clear expectations around accessibility. Their goal was to meet WCAG 2.0 AA standards and create a website that supported visitors with varying abilities. While the redesigned site launched meeting accessibility requirements, Energy Northwest understood that accessibility is not a one-time milestone. Websites evolve. Content changes. Documents and media are added. These variables can introduce new accessibility considerations over time. The challenge was not only building an accessible site, but also maintaining those standards as the organization continued to update and expand its online content.

Energy Northwest’s emphasis on keeping information current heightened the need for a long-term accessibility plan. Timely updates to news, project details, and public resources are essential for the communities they serve, which means new content is added regularly. Each addition brings the responsibility of preserving accessible formatting, readable structure, and clear navigation. This created a need for their internal teams to feel prepared and confident when updating the site.

Solutions

To support long-term accessibility, Energy Northwest opted into Powerful’s yearly accessibility audit. The audit provides a comprehensive review of the website and digital documents to ensure continued alignment with WCAG 2.0 AA standards. During each audit, elements such as readable text, labeled form fields, contrast, document structure, and caption accuracy are evaluated. This routine review helps catch issues early and promotes consistent accessibility as new content is added throughout the year.

In addition to the audit, Energy Northwest selected Powerful’s accessibility training to support the staff members responsible for updating and maintaining content. The training is delivered as a hands-on webinar and introduces foundational accessibility concepts. Participants learn how to apply headings correctly, write effective alt text, structure documents, and ensure links and media support screen readers and other assistive technologies.

Together, the audit and training create a balanced approach. The audit reinforces compliance by identifying areas that need attention, while the training empowers the internal team to apply accessible practices in day-to-day updates. This pairing helps Energy Northwest stay proactive, rather than reactive, as their website continues to evolve.

Results

Through this proactive approach, Energy Northwest continues to support a site that remains accessible as it grows and changes. The yearly audit brings consistency and reassurance, helping ensure ongoing updates remain compliant and visitor-friendly. The training gives their internal team the confidence to curate content responsibly and maintain accessibility across all areas of the site.

Together, these efforts help sustain a foundation where accessibility is integrated into routine website management rather than treated as an afterthought. The site remains inclusive, adaptable, and prepared for future updates while continuing to meet the expectations of a diverse audience. This steady, forward-focused approach positions Energy Northwest to evolve confidently, maintain accessibility with each update, and keep serving its communities with transparency and care.

Working on this website for Energy Northwest was one of those projects where the more we explored, the more the design started to reveal itself. It was a design we all had to get to together through mutual appreciation of the brand. This brand had a quiet strength to it and I wanted to make sure that was apparent through imagery, patterns and bold font choices. At the end of the day, the goal was to build something that reflects the scale and success of Energy Northwest. I think we got there.

Design

Energy Northwest is an operating agency that prides itself on innovation through the generation of clean reliable electricity, and they needed a website that communicated that to their customers. For their most important, content heavy pages, we were able to visualize them so site visitors could easily digest the information with the help of graphics, imagery, and breaking up the “wall of words”. One of my personal favorites is the About Nuclear Energy page, which breaks down a topic that seems daunting into a format that is easy to understand and visually appealing. This site turned out so sleek and I hope it serves the EN Team well!
