Overview

Meet Columbia Power & Water Systems

Columbia Power and Water Systems (CPWS) is committed to keeping the lights on, water flowing, and internet buzzing. Prioritizing their community’s interests, CPWS partnered with Powerful to modernize their online presence.

Enhancing Engagement

One of the primary objectives of the redesign was to boost visitor engagement. Powerful addressed this goal by transforming traditional content-heavy pages into more engaging, visually appealing experiences. The newly designed Careers page exemplifies this approach. Powerful broke down the job application process into digestible pieces, highlighted current openings, and outlined the benefits of joining the CPWS team. By replacing walls of text with engaging graphics and streamlined content, the visualized page increases the time visitors spend on the page, boosting overall website engagement.

Streamlining Application Processes with Innovative Online Tools

In addition to enhancing visual engagement, CPWS aimed to increase the use of online tools, making interactions with the website more smooth and intuitive. Powerful implemented the Jobs web app. This app simplifies the job posting and application process for both CPWS administrators and job seekers. It allows administrators to easily add and update job listings with all the necessary details and keep them current with real-time information. On the front end, job seekers benefit from a visitor-friendly interface that allows them to apply directly through CPWS’ website.

Powerful’s introduction of online forms simplify the process, allowing applicants to submit all necessary information. These forms notify specific departments automatically when an application is submitted, streamlining the hiring process and enhancing efficiency for both CPWS and its applicants.

Challenges

CPWS did not want a generic or overly modern redesign that could dilute their local character, making the website feel disconnected from the community they serve. Powerful faced the challenge of ensuring that CPWS' new website remained connected to their local community's identity.

Solutions

To address this challenge, Powerful created a custom illustrated footer. Powerful and CPWS worked closely together to determine which local elements resonated most deeply with the community and CPWS’ identity. This design element distinctively features local elements such as the Mules Day Parade, the old Columbia Dam, and the Maury County Courthouse. This creative solution creates a sense of familiarity and pride, making the website more than a utility platform, but a reflection of CPWS' ongoing commitment to their community.

Results

The custom illustrated footer serves as a vibrant visual representation of CPWS' role within the community. This unique design element subtly turned CPWS' website into a more engaging and community-focused platform. Carefully integrated with the website's overall color scheme, the footer complements CPWS' branding, enhancing the cohesive look and feel of the website. By embedding this illustration into the website's footer, Powerful transformed a simple navigation area into a meaningful touchpoint that connects with CPWS' local community.

For CPWS’ website redesign, we embraced their distinctive gradient as a pivotal component of the color scheme, infusing the site with a vibrant, playful ambiance that evokes immediate brand recognition to their members. Paired with neutrals and balanced negative space, we have a harmonious design that is modern & clean yet welcoming & energetic. Additionally, we strategically positioned the logo wordmark into the homepage layout that not only directs attention to key tasks but also injects a dynamic visual element that disrupts the conventional horizontal flow.
