Energizing Engagement
For more than eight decades, Alfalfa Electric Cooperative (AEC) has powered homes, farms, and businesses across northwest Oklahoma and southern Kansas. Founded on cooperative values and fueled by a spirit of community, AEC continues to serve its members with reliability, transparency, and care. As communication increasingly happens online, AEC saw an opportunity to create a website that reflects the same trust and accessibility members experience in person.
With a focus on connection, the new site was designed to increase engagement, strengthen transparency, and make navigation effortless for every visitor. The result is a modern platform that feels familiar and honors AEC’s heritage while supporting the evolving needs of its members.
Showcasing the Cooperative Spirit
AEC’s mission extends well beyond delivering electricity– it’s about empowering the people who make up its community. From youth programs and scholarships to member benefits, AEC invests in opportunities that support growth and connection. The redesigned website needed to make these opportunities easy to find and inviting to explore.
Powerful implemented the Springwater blueprint, a promotional design that emphasizes programs and services through dynamic visuals and clear organization. The homepage features local photography, concise copy, and direct calls to action that guide visitors to key information. At launch, AEC highlighted youth program opportunities alongside core member services like billing options and capital credits– showcasing both the cooperative’s care for its community and its dedication to service.
The promotional blueprint creates a homepage that feels engaging and purposeful. Each section draws attention without clutter, encouraging exploration and deeper interaction. Whether members are checking billing options or learning how their cooperative supports local students, the experience feels natural and community-driven– just like AEC itself.
Democracy in Action
AEC’s strength lies in its cooperative structure– run by members, for members. Its Board of Trustees represents local voices, ensuring decisions are made by the very people who understand the community’s needs. The redesign provided an opportunity to make that governance model more visible and accessible online, supporting the second Cooperative Principle: Democratic Member Control.
Powerful helped translate this cooperative principle into a tangible digital experience through the Staff Directory app. AEC now showcases professional photos, titles, and contact information for both staff and board members. Visitors can easily identify the individuals who keep their cooperative running and reach them through click-to-dial phone numbers and direct email links. This functionality turns transparency into everyday practice, allowing members to see exactly who represents them and how to get in touch.
The result is a website that feels personal, open, and grounded in the cooperative way. Members can put faces to familiar names and engage directly with their trustees. This level of accessibility reinforces member trust and participation, making governance a shared, community-driven experience rather than a distant process.
Challenges
As Alfalfa Electric Cooperative continued to expand, so did the scope of its work. In addition to providing reliable electric service, the cooperative operates AEC Services, a subsidiary offering HVAC installation and repair, licensed electrical work, and cellulose attic insulation. While AEC and AEC Services share the same values, their audiences often arrive online looking for different information. The challenge was to design a website that clearly distinguishes the cooperative’s electric operations from its contractor services without disconnecting the two. AEC wanted both divisions to feel unified under one cooperative identity while still making it simple for visitors to find the right department.
Solutions
To achieve this, Powerful implemented a department header that allows visitors to toggle seamlessly between AEC and AEC Services. The header sits at the top of each page, creating an intuitive path for members who might visit to pay their electric bill, then switch over to request an HVAC quote or electrical repair. The design aligns visually but uses different imagery, gradients, and messaging to reflect the nature of each department. Both departments are supported by a shared backend system, allowing AEC’s staff to manage updates for both sites within a single platform. This setup keeps maintenance efficient and ensures consistent branding across every page. Subtle differences in color palettes and photography help visitors immediately recognize which side they’re viewing, while still reinforcing the trust and familiarity associated with the AEC name.
Results
The department header transforms how visitors experience AEC online. With one click, members can switch between the cooperative’s electric operations and its contractor services without confusion or delay. The structure highlights AEC’s versatility—showing that the same organization keeping the lights on can also help maintain and improve local homes and businesses. This design opens the door for continued growth, allowing AEC to expand its services without complicating the visitor experience. It strengthens recognition for both sides of the organization while maintaining one cohesive identity.

When it came to their new website, Alfalfa Electric Cooperative was looking for something bold, friendly, and shared their unique story with new and returning members. By combining our Springwater blueprint with their unique branding and design elements, we were able to create an experience that was fresh and caught site visitors’ attention as soon as they landed on the homepage. Additionally, we were able to carry out a similar theme to their AEC Services subsidiary, allowing members to stay engaged as they learn what they have to offer through the homepage promotionals. Collaboration on this project was so much fun with the Alfalfa Electric team and I can’t wait to see how they settle into their new digital home!
