Modernizing Alaska’s Energy Communications
Representing electric utilities from Utqiaġvik to Unalaska, the Alaska Power Association (APA) stands as the unified voice of Alaska’s electric utilities. Alongside its sister organization, the ARECA Insurance Exchange (AIE), APA supports the utilities that deliver safe, reliable, and affordable power to more than half a million Alaskans.
APA partnered with Powerful to redesign their website with three key goals in mind: increase the use of online tools to reduce phone calls and emails, create easy and intuitive navigation between APA and AIE resources, and elevate engagement with members through a modern, interactive experience.
For an organization whose mission is to empower those who power Alaska, this redesign was a step toward strengthening communication and accessibility across some of the most remote communities in the nation.
Streamlined Navigation Between Two Organizations
APA and AIE share a common mission—to support Alaska’s electric utilities—but each serves a unique purpose. APA advocates on behalf of member utilities, while AIE provides specialized insurance coverage and risk management services. The challenge was creating a single website that clearly distinguished their offerings without forcing visitors to jump between separate sites.
Powerful designed a department header that elegantly bridges both organizations. This feature allows visitors to toggle effortlessly between Alaska Power Association and ARECA Insurance Exchange, with each section maintaining its own identity, color palette, and content focus. Visitors browsing APA’s policy positions or training events can easily switch to AIE’s insurance resources and claims information with a single click.
For APA’s administrators, everything is managed through one cohesive content management system, simplifying operations behind the scenes. Updates for both APA and AIE live under a single dashboard, allowing staff to maintain two departments without the hassle of managing separate systems.
The department header established an intuitive structure that mirrors the partnership between APA and AIE—two unique organizations, one unified experience. Visitors can now locate information faster, explore relevant content naturally, and toggle between sites with ease. For admins, the streamlined workflow means less time spent on technical upkeep and more time serving members.
Design that Reflects Alaska’s Strength & Spirit
APA wanted a website that reflects their leadership, credibility, and connection to Alaska’s energy community. The design needed to engage visitors, strengthen membership participation, and showcase the association’s mission with confidence.
Innovation has always been part of APA’s DNA. From supporting the development of Alaska’s first electric cooperatives to exploring emerging technologies, APA leads with an inventive spirit that helps its members power some of the most remote communities in the world. They wanted that same energy to come through online—creating a platform that informs and inspires action. For prospective members, that means understanding the value of joining; for existing members, it means staying engaged through workshops, meetings, and advocacy efforts that keep Alaska moving forward.
Powerful’s premium design offered the flexibility and creativity needed to capture that spirit. Built with a unique layout, the new site allows their staff to feature timely updates, showcase member programs, and highlight advocacy efforts. The homepage draws visitors in with striking imagery and clear navigation, while dynamic sections—like “Meetings & Events” and “In the Spotlight”—keep content fresh and encourage repeat visits.
The result is a website that embodies APA’s innovative approach to service and communication. Built through close collaboration between APA and Powerful, the site bridges professionalism with purpose, transforming complex information into an accessible experience.
Challenges
For an organization that represents electric utilities across one of the most remote and expansive regions in the country, accessibility is everything. The Alaska Power Association (APA) and ARECA Insurance Exchange (AIE) rely on consistent communication to serve members spread across the state. Many of their essential forms—such as New Member Applications, RFP/RFQ submissions, and contribution forms—were previously available only as downloadable PDFs. While this system worked, it required multiple steps that often slowed interaction and limited accessibility.APA’s forward-looking team recognized that these small barriers could have a big impact. They wanted to make engagement easier for every visitor—whether someone was submitting a new member application or an RFP. Transitioning these processes online became a natural extension of APA’s innovative spirit and their ongoing commitment to strengthening communication statewide.
Solutions
Powerful collaborated with APA to transform their static PDFs into interactive online forms that streamline communication and participation. Each form—whether a New Member Application, RFP submission, or contribution form—was built directly into the website, allowing visitors to complete and submit information without downloading or printing a single page. The forms were designed with clear, accessible layouts and logical flow, ensuring that even those unfamiliar with digital tools could complete them easily. For APA’s administrative team, the benefits were just as significant. Submissions now route directly to the appropriate department or staff member, eliminating manual data entry and reducing response times. The new system also allows for easier updates, so APA can adjust form fields, add instructions, or modify submission routing as their programs evolve. This flexibility ensures the site remains a living, adaptable tool—built to grow alongside the organization’s needs.
Results
The shift from PDFs to online forms has transformed how APA and AIE communicate with members and partners. Visitors can now engage with the organization from anywhere, on any device, creating a smoother experience that reflects APA’s forward-thinking values. Tasks that once required printing, mailing, or scanning can now be completed in minutes, keeping communication as efficient as the utilities APA represents. For APA’s team, these tools have created smoother workflows and improved response times, reinforcing the organization’s reputation for forward-thinking leadership. Members now experience a more responsive, accessible touchpoint—whether joining, submitting proposals, or contributing to key initiatives—helping strengthen relationships across Alaska’s vast energy network. The success of this transformation extends beyond convenience; it embodies APA’s mission to connect communities through innovation, ensuring engagement remains simple, efficient, and built for the future.

What a project! The team at the Alaska Statewide was such a pleasure to work with and it was great to watch their vision come to life. With the department header package, they were able to maximize branding for both the APA and AIE sites, while having similar design elements trickled throughout. The team kept their members top of mind throughout the process, ensuring information and resources were easy to find. One of my favorite projects by far!
